No audio in DV Clip on CS5. Audio plays in QT.

    RobSher1 Level 1

      PP Windows 7, 6GB, I7, Nvidia 480

Copied project from Mac CS4 to new PC running CS5. Audio plays fine on MAC in CS4 PP.

      The movie is  720 x 480 (1.2121), 29.97 fps, 48000 Hz - 16-bit - Mono and plays with the audio in QuickTime.

The files were converted by a TV producer as .mov file types where he had to spit them out into 2GB extensions for a FAT32 drive. Not sure what you would call them (like a split zip on PC), but there is a primary file i.e. TAPE ONE-v.mov and then 6 files like TAPE ONE-1-v.mov, TAPE ONE-2-v.mov, etc.

There is no audio in the Project or Source windows and they create two empty mono audio tracks on the timeline.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I need to finish a trailer this weekend.

It could be the AIFF Audio in those MOV files. I have had issues with that format/CODEC and ended up converting to PCM/WAV in Audition.. What is the Audio Stream of the files?

          Good luck,

Not sure how to tell what the audio stream is. Can you give me exact details to determine what they are.

I deleted the cfa and pek files after closing PP and the project ran through the Conforming sequence when I reopened the project. I can see the cfa and pek files for those clips and the cfa files are all around 500 MB.

            Still don't have the audio.

            Thanks,

            Rob

              Rob,

One can use several utilities, like G-Spot, or MediaInfo, or even QT Pro (Ctrl+J) to get the specs. of most AV files.

As a test, do you have a program, like Adobe Audition, or the free audio-editor, Audacity? If so, rip the Audio from the MOV files, and then do a Save_As, choosing PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit, and Import that into your PrPro Project. Does this WAV file play fine?

              Good luck,

I did an Apple J in QT 7 Pro on my mac.

                Video: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

                Audio: Integer (Little Endian)

I'll convert the audio if I have to, but don't see why CS5 works the same as CS4 where the audio is included with the video.

Are there any log files on the PC that I can check to see what it's doing?

                Thanks.... Rob

I created a wave file on the Mac and have imported them to CS5 on the PC. It's a hassle because original clip time code is different than the audio file.

I'm baffled and frustrated that CS5 can't import the audio with the video file when it works fine on CS4. I've tested the video on both a Mac and PC running CS4 and it works great. This is really strange. Guess I'll have to log a support call with Adobe.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Rob

Yeah, that's not going to get you anywhere. Support seems to know less than we (i.e. real users) actually do. If we can't solve it, I can virtually guarantee that they can't. I don't like throwing Adobe under the bus, but on this aspect, they pretty much suck.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Rob

The fact that you can use these in CS4 but not in CS5 would, IMO, be due to the 64-bit nature of Premiere Pro CS5. Right now, I think that QuickTime support might be in a state of flux, as QT is still 32-bit, and Adobe has implemented some brute-force means of making QTs work in Premiere Pro CS5. No guarantees, but this would be my estimation.

You might try running the files through QuickTime Pro to export them to a new DV file, or perhaps MPEG Streamclip (Google it; it's free). There might just be some variations of QT files that won't work in CS5, at least at the present time.

                      Thanks Colin...

I exported the audio and added them to a new CS5 full sequence, then exported to P2 Movie NTSC DVCPro50. I was able to import them and the audio works fine.

I'll try your suggestion to export the sequences in QT Pro to a new DV file and see if that works.

Another interesting feature is that the CS5 project always prompts for the file location of the .mov's when I restart PP.

At least I can continue working now.

                      Thanks all....

This is almost always a case of the Project file (PRPROJ) loosing the link to the Assets. One common situation is when the Assets are on an external, and the OS assigns a different drive letter, each time that the external is plugged in. It can also happen on networked drives too.

The "trick," if the Assets are on an external, is to assign a constant drive letter to that external in the OS. I do this for all of my externals on the PC, and just assign that same drive letter in the OS of all of my computers, so if I plug in Z:\, it is always seen as Z:\, regardless of which computer is being used. I do not know about Mac drive letter assignment.

                        Good luck,

                          Hi Bill,

Great tip about maintaining a consistent external drive letter.

Mine looks like a bug because the file is on my C:\ drive in the same folder as the project.

As a side question (probably not kosher)

I don't have contact with my camera guy anymore and wonder if you or someone else knows what he used to convert the HD footage to a multi-file mov?

Don't know which camera, but the film is Sony DVCAM. I know he converted the tape from HD to SD.

I'm converting the files in QT Pro to one QT movie, but will still log a support call tomorrow about both issues.

                          Thanks again for your help,

                          Rob

                            Rob,

QT Pro has a Properties function (Ctrl+J on the PC), that should give you most of the details of those original files. The only two utilities that I use are G-Spot and MediaInfo, but do not think that they run on a Mac. Also, while G-Spot is great with AVI and MPEG, it falls down a bit with MOV and WMV's.

                            Good luck,

Bill, I think you've solved the mystery in terms of where CS5 is going wrong.

Using MediaInfo, I was able to see there are three audio tracks.

Audio #1: PCM, 1 channel, Bit Rate 768 Kbps, Sample Rate 48 KHz, Stream size 330 MiB that spans all six video files

Audio #2: PCM, 1 channel, Bit Rate 768 Kbps, Sample Rate 48 KHz, Stream size 330 MiB that spans all six video files

Audio #3: PCM, Muxing mode: DV, Bit rate 1536, 2 channels, Stream size 0 Byte

PP must be importing the empty Audio #3.

More info to help Adobe fix this in some future release (no comment -)

Interesting. To get your Project out the door, can you rip the Audio from the muxed streams, and then Save_As PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit, and Import that?

Just thinking here, and good luck,

Next time put your material anywhere but the C-drive.

C-drive is for OS and programms, nothing else.
