use a preloader swf.
It already has one. When the site opens the preloader starts and ends at the botton to "play" the swf. I want a way that the preloader does not preload until requested via a button or link or something.
In other words I want the swf to do nothing until someone clicks on a link or button. Then the preloader can start. the preloading slows down the site opening.
Is the preloader a separate swf or is it built into the file you don't want to load?
no, use a preloader swf: a separate swf that displays nothing but what you want the user to see when you app first appears. from your description that would be a play button.
if that play button is clicked, then display your current swf with its preloader display and whatever else.
My preloader is built into the file I don't want to load.
I didn't realise I could build a seperate preloader that could execute the entire swf that also has a preloader built in. Thanks for the recommendation I will give that a try. My problem has been that I don't have access to the .fla to edit the original file.
