Why are there blocks of background when I open a illustrator eps in Photoshop?

I have a vector logo created in illustrator. Included in the original design is a bitmapped image of a drop shadow, the transparency for that image is set as "Multiply" at 20% opacity. Other than that, the background is supposed to be transparent. I saved this file as an eps but when I open it in Photoshop all these white blocks of background show up when it should be totally transparent. Another thing I noticed about opening or copying and pasting illustrator files in photoshop is that there is all this mysterious extra blank space that suddenly appeared around the object. Where did it come from? Anyone know? And if so, any idea how to correct it?
