How to slow down socket writes to avoid server overrun?

I am having a problem with my socket communication where i post a huge 6 MB bytearray and the POST command is not working because the receiving device is getting overruns. At the moment i am building a big byte array up using socket.writeBytes and other write operations, and then i have one flush() call.  This doesn't work. Can i break up the write by periodically using a timer calling the .writeBytes() with a chunk, then waiting for a while before doing another flush() call.... or do i have to wait for response after each flush() call?  The documentation is totally unclear about the sequence of steps.
