1. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
chicagonature Jun 28, 2010 10:07 PM (in response to chicagonature)New development: I am able to recreate the problem.
WhenI add one particular image to the collection, at first it gets added and so do all the other pictures during that same session. But, here's the weird part: After I close out Bridge and then return, anything that I added to the collection during that previous session will NOT be in the collection as long as that one image was added during that session. It's all due to one particular image.
So, who at Adobe wants to try it for themselves? I can send you the image if you wish.
Thanks,
Mike

Also, check the file name closely so make sure it is labeled correctly (i.e. abc.jpeg.jpg)

Curt Y Jun 29, 2010 10:06 AM (in response to chicagonature)If you have Bridge set to autoload on Startup it will not remember any of the settings you ended with if you shut off computer with Bridge running. You either have to close Bridge first, or
the recommended solution is to disable the autostart. Think it is in advanced preferences. The autostart casues several other problems as well.
Hope this helps.

chicagonature Jun 29, 2010 10:14 AM (in response to Curt Y)Curt,
No autoloading on startup.
And, it does remember, it just doesn't remember when this file is included in the mix.
If at any time I add this picture to a collection, all pictures added to that collection during that session will not appear in the collection the next time I open Bridge. However, it does remember otherwise.
Thanks,
Mike

juliem321 Jun 29, 2010 10:49 AM (in response to chicagonature)Hi Mike,
Where is the problem file located (local machine, external hard drive, network drive, etc.)? What happens if you copy the file to another location and try to add it to an arbitrary collection? You can send me the file so I can try to reproduce it in house (juliem at adobe dot com). Also, please let me know the following information:
- Windows OS you're running
- Exact version of Bridge CS5 (4.0.0, 4.0.1 or 4.0.2)
Thanks,

windmillpc Jun 29, 2010 1:01 PM (in response to juliem321)Curt, Mike, and Julie -
I am having the exact same issue with Adobe Bridge CS5 except that it has nothing to do with any particular image that I add to a collection. No matter what image I add to a collection when I "Command Q" out of Bridge and then launch bridge again the collection will be put back to "0 items."
I've tried using all kinds of different images and get the same result. Tried the cache thing - still getting the same results. Tried creating a new smart collection, same result.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

9. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
chicagonature Jun 29, 2010 2:10 PM (in response to windmillpc)Hi Jeremy,
Julie recommended that I copy the problem image to another folder and then see if it can be added to the collection. Yes, that worked. But, I discovered that it's just not that one picture. It's all of them in the same folder. Now, it was this very folder that I copied from Bridge CS3 on a Windows 2000 machine onto a Windows 7 machine with Bridge CS5 using BRIDGE CS3 "Copy To" command. However, I did this with second folder at the same time, yet all those pictures in that folder work just fine.
So, it's something buggy because there should be some consistency.
I'm sure Julie will be able to learn more.

10. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
windmillpc Jun 29, 2010 3:01 PM (in response to chicagonature)Yeah - that's interesting.
I just created a new folder on my desktop and moved a couple of images from the folder where I was currently pulling images from and putting them in collections - moved those images to the newly created folder on the desktop.
I then went back into bridge and went to the desktop folder, dragged images into some different collections, closed bridge, opened bridge back up and the images actually stayed within the collections like they were supposed to.
Kinda strange so it looks like I'm gonna have to copy all my images to another location in order to get bridge to hold my collections which stinks because I currently use "dropbox" to sync images across a macbook pro and a mac. So not sure if Bridge is not liking dropbox or just that folder...
I'm hoping that I can just change the newly created folder to be dropbox sync and Bridge will play nice...
Any thoughts Julie??
Thanks
Jeremy

chicagonature Jun 29, 2010 3:04 PM (in response to windmillpc)Jeremy,
Now, I'm not seeing that it's happening with other files and folders. It's just not a one file or one folder issue.
This is definitely an Adobe problem, not something we did.
All I did was to remove the hard drives and put them in the new machine. Then, I upgraded to CS5 from CS3.
BTW, did you upgrade to CS5 from CS3?

14. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
windmillpc Jun 29, 2010 7:14 PM (in response to juliem321)Thanks for the help Mike and Julie!
I'll sit tight till I hear back from Julie or someone else over at Adobe.
I'm thinking it has something to do with Bridge CS5 as well. What I finally narrowed it down to is that if anything was in a subfolder to a folder called "Jeremy's Stuff" it wouldn't save any of those images in the collections. If I renamed "Jeremy's Stuff" to say, "My Stuff" it would save my images to the collections folder but Bridge would crash every 2 minutes. I would reopen it and it would crash again as soon as I went to "my stuff"...
So here's my specs:
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 (I realize Mikes on a PC but he this is the only forum I could find with this problem so I jumped in) on a 15" Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 (and this does not mean I agree with Steve Jobs and the exclusion of flash - Adobe has kept me up and running for a long time - minus currently)
I upgraded Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator CS4 to Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5 which in turned updated Bridge to CS5. On a sidenote. After the upgrade Bridge would crash in the first 3 seconds I would open it which is frusterating cause Bridge is essentially my hub. So I uninstalled everything and just installed CS5 without having CS4 installed on the computer.
This problem is on Adobe Bridge CS5 version 4.0.2.1
Sitting tight.

windmillpc Jun 29, 2010 7:18 PM (in response to windmillpc)Also - my file path is essentially

16. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
juliem321 Jun 29, 2010 7:21 PM (in response to windmillpc)Jeremy and Mike,
Thanks for all the info. I have also narrowed it down to the apostrophe as part of the path to the filename. It seems that when the file that stores the information about collections is read back into Bridge, everything after the apostrophe character is ignored. I will log a bug and see if I can get any more information. For now, avoiding an apostrophe in the folder name is the workaround.
Jeremy, I have only had a chance to test on Windows so far. I'll test on a Mac tomorrow and see if I also repro the crashing issue.
Regards,
Julie

18. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
juliem321 Jun 30, 2010 10:52 AM (in response to windmillpc)Hi Jeremy,
I've logged a bug on the collection issue when there's a single quote/apostrophe in the path to the filename. The workaround as I indicated in a previous post is to avoid using a single quote in folder/filenames.
I haven't been able to reproduce the crash you are seeing. Would you please email me a crash log directly (juliem at adobe dot com) and I'll get a bug logged on that? It's possible that the cache for that folder is corrupted. If you can get to that folder in Bridge before it crashes and select Tools>Cache>Purge Cache for Folder, that might help. You can purge central cache on startup by holding down the Option key when starting Bridge. You'll get a Reset Settings dialog and can choose to reset prefs, reset workspaces and/or purge central cache. You could also try creating a new folder and copying all the files from the "My Stuff" folder to the new folder and see if Bridge is able to view the new folder successfully.
Thanks,
Julie

19. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
Clare Macrae Sep 11, 2010 9:23 AM (in response to juliem321)I've just noticed this problem, by chance, whilst moving data to a new computer.
We found that files that were in collections were randomly missing from Bridge CS5's display, and sure enough, as described earlier, as soon as a file in the collection with a quote/spostrophe was read, that file and the rest of the collection were missing from Bridge CS5's display.
(This was using Bridge 4.0.3.9. Adobe Application Manager tells me my software is uptodate)
Because we had some backed up copies of Collections from both Bridge CS4 and Bridge CS5, I've been able to work a few things out, which I hope might help someone at Adobe get the problem fixed - and might help a few frustrated users too...
Background
The following entirely applies to Windows 7 (and presumably Windows Vista too):
In Bridge CS4, collections files are stored in:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS4\Collections
In Bridge CS5, collections files are stored in:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS5\Collections
Both CS4 and CS5 store their Collections in files called <collection name>.filelist
Both are XML files, where file paths are surrounded by apostrophes:
For example:
<file uri='bridge:fs:file:///D:/Shared%20Images/Flowers/RHS/DSC_0788.jpg'>
Both Bridge CS4 and CS5 convert any spaces in file paths to %20 - so /Shared%20Images/ above is actually /Shared Images/ on disk.
The cause of the bug
Crucially, however, in Bridge CS4, any apostrophes (i.e. single quotes) in file paths get converted to %27
But this conversion does not happen in Bridge CS5. And then when filelists get read back in, the data is truncated.
As a developer, I'm surprised at this sort of regression in behaviour, in such expensive software from such a large company.
Workarounds
None of these should be required to be done by a user, I feel, but I have found that they do work, and they could be scripted (e.g. in Python) if someone were sufficiently desparate:
- Edit your .filelist files that were created by Bridge CS5, and convert all ' in file paths to %27 - oh yes, and remember to do that every time you add any new files to any existing or new Collections
- Edit your .filelist files and change the single quotes at the start and end of each <file uri line to double quotes
I don't regard "remove quotes from your file names" as an acceptable workaround, however. We've got nearly 400GB of files, going back more than 10 years, and various of these are referred to from other locations, e.g. InDesign publications: if we were to rename locations for the benefit of Bridge, we'd break other stuff on the PC.

Clare Macrae Jan 2, 2011 4:17 AM (in response to Clare Macrae)Hi Drew,
[note to self: if you reply by email to a forum message, and include quoted text from an earlier message, the rest of your text following the quote will get deleted... So, this is Take 2...
further note to self: adobe will only let you reply once to the email notification on a thread - the second reply bounces, so you have to then log in to the forum website to reply... Sigh]
Yes, I agree, it's frustrating - and I'm disappointed that no-one from Adobe has replied to this Forum post, as it's such a time-wasting bug.
(I did try contacting Julie Manley from Adobe on 11th Sept - see earlier in this thread - but the message bounced)
Have you checked that the missing images had quotes in either their file names or folder names?
If so, if you can be bothered, you can try out one of the workarounds I give in my post above, of 11th Sept 2010, but that's only a temporary fix, until the next time you add any images with apostrophes in the name, which will also be omitted, and need to have their paths edited.

Guess I am too old school. Have never used e-mail reply, and it seems like anyone that does handicaps themselves.
Once a rely is sent any edits to that message will not be seen by e-mail readers. The edits would have to be sent in a seperate reply for the e-mail reader to receive it.
There are prohibited characters that can not be used in the filename becasue of restictions of the OS. I don't know what the interaction of the OS and Bridge is, but if I were to guess I would think that would be the base problem.

DrewF Jan 2, 2011 11:06 AM (in response to Curt Y)Not only was the work in creating my 400+ image collection lost... the pictures were DELETED!
I just emptied my trash can. I examined it before emptying it. I didn't see anything unusual as far as deleted files from yesterday.
I am now in the process of restoring all files from backup.
Special characters that I see in the archived file names: equals sign, minus, and space.
Once files are restored, I will try creating collections and double check my progress every 5 minutes or so.
Thanks,

27. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
DrewF Jan 2, 2011 3:26 PM (in response to DrewF)I see that some of my folders contain apostrophies.
I see that adding a picture from such a folder will screw-up the collection.
I just tried editing the collection file as described in Clare's workaround dated Sep 11, 2010 9:23 AM.
(Clare, thanks for tiping me off about this solution.)
I think there is a slightly easier solution...
1. Find the line in the collection file that references the apostrophy in the file or folder name.
2. Change the first and last apostrophy (') on that line to double quotes ("). So...
Change
<file uri='bridge: ... .PSD'>
To
<file uri="bridge: ... .PSD">
That's all I needed to do. I didn't need to change every line. I didn't need to change anything inside of that string.
Still... this is stupid!
Thanks Clare!

28. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
DrewF Jan 2, 2011 3:31 PM (in response to DrewF)I think the reason I had problems with files getting deleted was the use of the delete key. I don't know why so many got deleted. I presumed the delete key would delete the file from the collection but leave the file in its original location. I think that is a bad presumption. One must right-click and select "remove from collection."

29. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
DrewF Jan 2, 2011 3:35 PM (in response to DrewF)My solution is not permanent. As soon as you add another image to the collection, the changes get lost.

30. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
DrewF Jan 2, 2011 3:53 PM (in response to DrewF)I don't think you need to change the first and last apostrophies on each line to double quotes. Bridge will just change those back with your next change to the collection.
All you need to do is change the apostrophies in the folder and file names to %27. And you need to remember to do that each time you had more files from folder/file names that contain apostrophies.

32. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
DrewF Jan 3, 2011 7:03 AM (in response to Clare Macrae)I found the best collection building process was to:
- frequently pause to record the number of images in each of my collections,
- note the next folder to be reviewed,
- exit Bridge,
- re-launch Bridge, and then
- compare the current collection counts to the noted counts.
If there was any discrepancy I would have to investigate and search for the culprit apostrophe in the previously reviewed set of folders & files. After doing a successful close & re-launch, I would make a backup copy of my collections folder (C:\Users\ {me} \AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS5\Collections) to make future backtracking easier and to make sure I didn't lose my work.
Upon finding a discrepancy I would either restore the backup or fix the apostrophy in the collections file.
What a pain in the bug!
- frequently pause to record the number of images in each of my collections,

33. Re: Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection
pattyphoto Dec 31, 2011 2:31 PM (in response to chicagonature)I have twice now added images to the collections folders in Bridge CS5, on a Mac 0SX 10.5.8, and I made a copy of the xml files on an external hard drive, but guess what, it still doesn't keep the links. I took off auto start for Bridge at restart. I have now wasted at least 2 days of completely headache work. Removing apostrophes from the file name each time you add a picture to a collection is ridiculous. This is really a pain. Adobe, what are you doing about this???

Curt Y Dec 31, 2011 3:22 PM (in response to pattyphoto)We are all just users like you.
Whenever I see EXTERNAL Drive and files not saved red flags appear. It could very well be permission problems and the files you write are not recorded as computer feels you do not have permission. Might try right click on Bridge icon and selecting "run as administrator" and see if that helps.
Also, I have heard the Smart Collections have less problems than Collections.
