You can use software only MPE, not hardware accelerated MPE.
Thank you kindly for your reply. I figured I was only able to use software only MPE as that is why it is all greyed out in my preferences. I was hoping I had not done something simple that would fix the issue.
So after reading a lot on here about MPE my question is this:
Is soft only MPE 64 bit? Is it still significantly better than my CS4 P.Pro that I had or did I just waste a crap of money on the upgrade? What does soft only MPE have to offer? so far my editing doesn't really seem to be much faster but I haven't put it to test yet. And of course, the render line is always red and not yellow like all those fantastic videos show when they're bragging about how cool Hardware accelerated MPE is.
If feel like I got robbed.
Thanks for your time.
Oh, one more thing. In the near future, "could" a driver update for my ATI Radeon HD 4850 possibly fix this issue? imacs will NOT replace CPU or GPU. For that, I am really, really annoyed. The main reason I bought this computer with the specs was to use Adobe at its best.

It is significantly better than CS4. We still have CS4 installed in one of our PCs for older projects that we often revisit. No need, for it, we are just being extra careful. Even Premiere CS5 software only is much faster than before, on the same system. Perhaps when editing you won't notice much of a difference however you will feel it when exporting your videos, after they have been properly edited.
It is not just Apple who won't replace your GPU, it is Dell and most other laptop manufacturers (unfortunately). I am sorry!
We've heard talks(in this forum) that the AMD GPUs won't be supported in this version (CS5). Which is really, really bad in my opinion mainly for AMD. If I was them I would be knocking and parading at Adobe's door every day offering my engineers to work on it. No doubt, NVIDIA sold more GPUs because of this one fact alone, I am one of the guys who bought another NVIDIA GPU becuase of Premiere alone.
I know a lot of people will disagree, but if you want to make the most out of your Apple laptop stick to Apple products. In this current version, however, the combination Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop is superior to the likes of Aperture, Final Cut Pro, etc in my opinion. Your mileage may vary!
Thanks for that answer Valter. Much appreciated. So to verify then, my ATI Radeon HD 4850 will most likely not get an update that will solve this issue.
The other thing I'm still not clear on is, is the soft MPE utilizing my 64 bit? I believe so but again not sure. If it's not, once again I feel I upgraded for nothing.
Thanks for your time and glad to see you're enjoying the upgrade.

Yes, this version is full 64 BIT. In Windows, a big problem has been the need to address memory over 4 GB, which is only possible in a 64 BIT system. As far as I understand 64 BIT can work on more instructions per clock than 32 BIT can, thus doing more in less time. This is a very basic explanation, but I think it outlines the differences between 32 BIT and 64 BIT well.
Yes, everything is 64 bit. Just by going from CS4 to CS5 I got a performance gain of nearly 40% with the same test on the same hardware with an ATI 4870 card. Look here: PPBM4 Benchmark
This is despite the fact that there is still an important bug in CS5, that when remedied, will give even more performance gains.
Good to know. Thanks.
Yeah, I've been PC forever but a lot of my music buddies convinced me to try apple. So here I am. I actually miss my desktop. I had it for 4 years and changed parts quite regularly. I didn't like some of the soft issues I was having but as far as keeping the thing current, it was effortless. Something I will definitely consider 4 or 5 years down the road when I make my next big computer purchase.
Again, thanks for the info!
Harm. Now there's an anwser I was waiting for. Thanks for the link and the clear cut gains. Even though I sadly can't utilize the MPE the way I hoped, getting somewhere around 40% increase is enough to ease my pain somewhat.
I "owe" Harm a benchmark of my system. Only today I've got my 2nd SSD. So I am hoping that 2 SSDs in RAID 0 will be good enough to handle most tasks and then after reinstalling everything I will benchmark my system. 222 GB from the 2 SSDs is a "lot" of storage... lol.

Right now (nobody knows if or when this will change) only selected nVidia cards will use hardware MPE
What is this important bug, Harm?
I hope you don't bug me about this bug, because this is something that is under the NDA.
Suffice to say it has a distinct negative impact on performance.
I may be very optimistic, but once this bug has been fixed, you can expect even bigger performance improvements from CS5.
Nope, Harm, I'm not going to but you about it. But it was YOU who mentioned it, NDA or no NDA - not me!
However, if you'd like to email me personally with the full details, I won't disclose it to anyone ;-o
Or me, Harm! I won't tell a soul...honest!
