    No Sound in DVD

    pcford Community Member

I have been having a calvacade of problems with Adobe products here and at my home 'puter here's the problem now. I was having problems with sound and someone suggested I export to mpg in Premiere.

The DVD works fine. The other I transcoded in Encore. That one works withing Encore in the preview function....it seems to sometimes plays with sound in Windows Media Player...however, it will not currently. Nor will it play in Cyber Link player. It WILL play on a DVD player/TV set-up. It will play with sound in the VLC player.

Should I go back to the one that is not playing and transcode all file videos to mpg from within Premiere? Someone (sorry I can't find the original exchange...I've been trying wrangle Adobe software for the last few weeks to get it to work...and sometimes I forget where I am) said that the transcoding function in Encore is not robust...Does this sound like the answer to my problem?...it worked once...Are there other possibilities?

What are the specs. on the Audio that you are Importing to Encore?

Are you Exporting and then Importing as a muxed file?

If so, try this. In PrPro, Export as elemental/elementary streams, i.e. one Video-only DV-AVI file and one Audio-only PCM/WAV file. Import the DV-AVI into En as a Timeline and the WAV as an Asset. Drag the WAV from the Project Panel to the appropriate Timeline. Do you now have Audio?

          Good luck,

            Thanks, Mike...

I took the DVDs over to an editor friends of mine and all the videos played...with sound. The media house which I work with has offered to run some test on my discs to see if there is a problem which they can see. I will report back...and try your solution if necessary.

In the last two months, I have had such a terrible time getting these  Adobe products to run...a very significant percentage of total working  hours. This has to stop. I ain't the greatest video editor/author,  that's for sure. But I'm not the most ham handed either...I have been  going through an incredible run of bad luck....or there may be a glitch  in the setup at work...In general, things have been working much better  here at home.

And thank you for your answer.

              More data points:

My computer has recently had its C drive wipe...and now it won't play DVDs at all. Apparently the problem may be more in the player end of things than the authoring end.

HOWEVER...How can one ensure that a DVD will play on a prospective client's machine....These are marketing video for a corporate audience...I presume new computers have the proper DVD codecs installed. However, in the corporate environment, you see some pretty ancient computer machinery still lurking around....It almost seems like it would be a good idea to somehow put the codec on the DVD.

I installed Nvidia DVD decoding software and everthing is happy happy with the computer...

Still not understanding why video plays on work computers but not sound (at least not in WMP...they did play in VLC player. Neither video nor sound played here...corrupted codec on three machines?

Now, I am using an older version of Encore, the CS2 Production Studio version of EncoreDVD 2.0, but have only had one Project fail. That one was from a "template" Project, where I just added the unique Assets, edited the "stock" Menus, and linked things up. This was #15 of a 17 disc set, and all before worked perfectly, as did the two remaining Projects. When I redid #15, things worked perfectly, so it had to be OE on my part.

This now encompasses many hundreds of Projects (all NTSC SD), with almost 2000 DVD-5's and about 300 DVD-9's delivered. I have never had a single disc returned.

I do everything the same way (I know that's boring, but works), in that I always Export DV-AVI Type II Video-only files from PrPro, with each Sequence/file representing a "chapter," or "scene," and each gets its own Timeline in Encore, so no Chapter Markers, no Chapter Playlists, and no ganged Assets. I then Export my Audio as a DD AC3 (DD 5.1 SS through the SurCode DD encoder plug-in), and Import that Audio-only file as an Asset, where I drag it to the appropriate Timeline. Many of these Projects also have DTS as the supplemental Audio stream. I seldom use Subtitles, but have in a few cases.

These Projects have been almost perfect, with only the above-mentioned glitch.

I only burn to Taiyo Yuden (DVD-5's), or Verbatim (DVD-9's), and choose a lower burn speed. I first test each Project on RW discs, and play them on an array of 6 set-top players, ranging from bargain basement cheapies to some esoteric high-end units, and then on at least two different computer multi-drives with CyberLink's PowerDVD software player.

That boring workflow has been nearly perfect, with not returned discs - ever.

Where I see most problems in Projects is with workflows, that introduce the potential for errors. Things such as Importing Assets that must be converted in some way. Encore is not an NLE, and wants to be fed Assets that are already adhering to the DVD, or BD specs. Actions, such as ganging many Assets onto a single Timeline, or not carefully Exporting Audio that is exactly 100%, or slightly shorter than the Video, or trying to mix Assets, seem to cause many errors.

I am sorry that you are so frustrated with Encore. It has not only been highly profitable for me, but also a whole lot of fun. I cannot ask for much more than that.

                  Good luck,

Wether or not a disc will play on any computer depends on wether or not there is a Media Player installed with both MPEG-2 and Dolby Digital Decoders installed. Microsoft are not legally allowed to give you this in a new installation as apparently it is not fair, and prevents people selling you something you can get for free if you look anyway. Media Player Classic will do the job. VLC works as it carries it's own decoder libraries internally and is not dependant on the OS players.

                      Neil...thanks for that...

I am perhaps the brightest bulb on the Xmas tree but two weeks ago I would have assumed that a computer equipped with a DVD player could play a DVD video. My collegues at work assumed the same thing. The fact is...someone producing a video for consumption on a computer in a corporate environment, you MUST NOT assume that the DVD will play on a given computer. Consideration has to be given to this fact...if the marketing video is not viewable, it does no good no matter how well made it is.

Thanks to all that have assisted!!

In most cases, multi-drives will come with some sort of DVD software player, though not always. There are many out there, and I really like CyberLink's PowerDVD. I have both the commercial version, plus the version included with my laptop's multi-drive. Both function very well. There are also others, as Neil mentioned. I also have, and like MediaPlayer Classic HC.

Especially in the corporate world, many IT departments will NOT install the DVD software players included with the multi-drives. They will also hesitate to download and install players like VLC, or MediaPlayer Classic HC, so some users are left with no DVD software players installed.

Some DVD authors will included ROM content with instructions and URL's for some of the better freeware players. Though free, you cannot include the installer, or the exe files, so one still must go to the site. Kind of like Acrobat Reader. You can furnish a link to Adobe, and instructions that it, or similar, are needed to view a PDF. Beyond that, it's up to the user, or to their IT department to get what is needed.

                        Good luck,

                          Thanks again Bill....

I my case I had an external DVD burner/player installed on my computer. Our IT person installed Cyber Link software with it...However, the free version will not play Dolby encoded sound....though some freeware DVD players will(!!)

The thread has been educational for me...I hope for others as well.

I had not encountered the DD 5.1 SS issue. Will have to check that out, as I have the "free" version on my laptop, but do not have a DD 5.1 SS sound card in it. Maybe I just never noticed before. I'll grab one of my DD 5.1 SS master DVD's and see what I get on the laptop. Probably just learned something new, and it will then limit my recs. to other, or at least a caveat about the Audio stream.

                            Thanks for reporting,
