1. Re: Record a voice over on a DV camera or on the computer?
ryclark Jul 2, 2010 3:55 AM (in response to Editor Naama)Yes definitely get yourself an external audio interface with built in mic preamps. They will be a thousand times better than the onboard audio interface which is only really meant for viewing You-tube video or communications a telephone quality.

Editor Naama Jul 2, 2010 7:00 AM (in response to ryclark)Thank you for your response!
Do you mean an external USB one? Could you please give me an example of one?
Is there a benefit to it being internal/external? Could it be an internal one?
By the way the specs for the mobo audio are:
- Realtek ALC889 codec
- High Definition Audio
- 2/4/5.1/7.1-channel
- Support for Dolby® Home Theater
- Support for S/PDIF In/Out
- Support for CD In
Does that fit the describtion youtube/telephone quality?
And what do you think about recording to a camera?

Yes, all onboard devices tend to suffer from interference from the computer power supplies which you wouldn't notice on normal computer speakers and, as you have found, on any decent microphone plugged in to record.
You could record to a camcorder but you would then have to go through extra steps to get the recording into your PC to match to your pictures.
Here are some USB interfaces.

Editor Naama Jul 2, 2010 11:02 AM (in response to ryclark)OK thanks!!!
And while using one of those interfaces would I benefit from using a sound card on my computer or is it a total waste of money?

Editor Naama Jul 2, 2010 11:10 AM (in response to Editor Naama)And another question:
Is there a good quality USB microphone that somehow includes the preamp and connects directly to the computer without an interface?

6. Re: Record a voice over on a DV camera or on the computer?
ryclark Jul 2, 2010 2:33 PM (in response to Editor Naama)One of those interfaces is an external soundcard for your computer so you don't need another.
Yes, decent USB microphones plug straight into the computer and can be very good quality. Look out for ones that also provide a headphone output for monitoring back the recordings from the computer. The only limitation an integrated USB mic has is that you are limited by the length of an USB connection which is only about 3 metres.

8. Re: Record a voice over on a DV camera or on the computer?
Editor Naama Jul 3, 2010 8:12 AM (in response to ryclark)Ryclark, I have one more question. I understand that you don't recommend an internal sound card for sound recordings due to interference from the computer power supplies.
What do you think about an internal sound card for listening to audio output? Could it improve audio output?

9. Re: Record a voice over on a DV camera or on the computer?
ryclark Jul 3, 2010 9:01 AM (in response to Editor Naama)The insides of a computer case are not a very good environment for audio signals. There are a lot of very high speed bits of data whizzing around that can cause interference to be added to the audio input and output of any onboard sound chip. However there used to be quite a few high quality add in soundcards that slotted into spare PCI slots on the motherboard. They could be very good but have now really been superceded by external USB and Firewire audio interfaces. The onboard sound is OK for playing Youtube videos and listening on a pair of cheap computer speakers. But feeding it to anything better will show up it's inadequacies.
