3. Re: Premiere pro CS4 crashes after project loads, any suggestions?
Bill Hunt Jul 7, 2010 11:53 AM (in response to nexgenVP)Well, that IS good news. It could be something as simple as another program, or Process, getting in the way. This ARTICLE might be useful in setting up your system for an editing session. If you have Win7, be sure to look down-thread to the link to Black Viper's Web site.
Good luck,

5. Re: Premiere pro CS4 crashes after project loads, any suggestions?
Bill Hunt Jul 7, 2010 1:18 PM (in response to nexgenVP)Some times, one has to look into many different possibilities and then throw out the ones that do not apply, or do not solve the issue. Often, one hits it right off, but other times, a lot of detective work needs to be done.
Good luck,

nobull8 Jul 8, 2010 4:08 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill,
1. Excellent advice as usual! Thanks for the reading about editing.
2. I was able to convert the AVB files. I downloaded a free trial of Media Converter 5, opened the bins in there and then exported the timeline to MOV. I then imported the MOV file into Premiere. I was having issues, I thought maybe it was because the one clip was so BIG (it was the whole 85 minute movie).

Bill Hunt Jul 8, 2010 4:12 PM (in response to nobull8)Dave,
Now, I am working with SD material, so that will likely be less demanding, than what you are doing, but I've easily had 2+ hour DV-AVI file on my Timeline, with no issues.
Good luck,

nobull8 Jul 9, 2010 12:40 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill,
Thanks for the advice. Today I went to work on the project it opened fine but then it crashed 3 times on me.
First time I tried top replace a small clip in Audition and it worked fine UNTIL it sent it back to Premiere then crashed.
Second time I clicked on another window. The projects froze and tried to rebuild the peaks of the large file.
'My computer specs are:
Intel E5530 @ 2.40 GHZ 2 processors. 64 Bit. With 1TB of memory.
I have Windows 7.
I used the "HIGH PERFORMANCE PLAN" under power usuage.
Does anybody know what could be causing this?! It's so unbelieveably frustrating.

9. Re: Premiere pro CS4 crashes after project loads, any suggestions?
Bill Hunt Jul 9, 2010 12:58 PM (in response to nobull8)I assume that you mean "1GB of RAM," or you have one monster machine.
Now, this ARTICLE might prove helpful in finding out what's going on, when you get a hang/crash. There are usually clues left behind in Event Viewer, and it'll give you tips on finding ones that might be useful.
Also, prior to an editing session, I use the tips in this ARTICLE to set things up. For Win7 tips, look down-thread for the link to Black Viper's tune up site.
Good luck,

nobull8 Jul 10, 2010 8:49 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks Bill!
It's odd Premiere never crashes or takes so long to load until I did this project. Could it be because the file was exported for Avid Media Composer 5 as an MOV?
I have the event viewer up but it says PP stopped communtating with Windows.

11. Re: Premiere pro CS4 crashes after project loads, any suggestions?
Bill Hunt Jul 10, 2010 5:54 PM (in response to nobull8)Well, on a PC, the ideal formats are DV-AVI Type II for SD and HDV for HD. These present the lowest level of overhead and edit like the hot knife in butter. When you feed the program other material, even if it Imports fine, there is processing necessary, and that can take a bit of power.
On a Mac, the MOV format is king, but you have to remember that MOV, like AVI, MPEG, WMV, etc., is but a wrapper. They can contain all sorts of CODEC's. Some can be edited, but a few present problems. Some are smooth and easy, but some require a lot of power to basically decode internally. So much will depend on the platform, and what is inside the MOV.
On my PC, I use a fair amount of MOV files, but always specify the Animation CODEC, and the PC does not even pause. It is almost as smooth and easy as a DV-AVI Type II.
So, I guess that the answer is - it depends. What is the CODEC in the MOV file?
Good luck,
Hunt

12. Re: Premiere pro CS4 crashes after project loads, any suggestions?
nobull8 Jul 10, 2010 8:47 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill,
The DV format works AMAZING! No lag, no crashes, etc.
The only thing is when I move clips, etc and have to link them up with other clips that little black bar doesn't come up to let me know when I'm overlapping clips. I believe this is the Find Edges Effect.
Thank you very much!

13. Re: Premiere pro CS4 crashes after project loads, any suggestions?
nobull8 Jul 11, 2010 7:51 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill,
As was able to burn the project in Encore. As I watched it I noticed that several clips were gone (these were all transition clips), so my guess is that when it exported Media Composer it just overwrote these transitions.
I'm exporting it (for the 6th time) as the animated Coded, I hope this is finally the end, lol.
Thanks again!

14. Re: Premiere pro CS4 crashes after project loads, any suggestions?
Bill Hunt Jul 11, 2010 11:48 AM (in response to nobull8)Unless I am missing something, that 'little black bar" is part of the Snap function. You can toggle it ON, or OFF, with the S-key. With Snap ON, you get a bold black bar with arrowheads, when you are near the Head, or Tail, of another Clip. With it OFF, you do not see that, and can slip-n-slide by one Frame, with no constraints. Hit S and see if you get that function back.
Good luck,
Hunt
