Problems with "DVD buttons "highlights"" made in Encore CS5

    fordchevyman Community Member

Before I begin I am running a MacPro Xeon Quad processor early 2009 model with internal Pioneer BDR-205 Bluray burner. Using Production Premum CS5 upgrade. I upgraded a real old version of Premiere. I hope to someday be able to use my MX02 Mini from Matrox when they get the supported software ready, as currently it only supports CS4. I did try to install since I bought it from videoguys and they gave me the assumption it worked together. But uninstalled the software and too the card out.

Am I the only person that has Encore CS5 that has problems with getting DVD's to represent the navigation button highlights correctly. I've always used Encore 1.5 so I'm accustomed to Encore and know how to do everything that needs to be done in the software. When I Upgraded to the new Production Premium encore was not to much different looking, just a few visual changes to the interface but not many, same as for after effects and premiere pro so I feel right at home with the all the software. I ran accross, to me, a major bug with the encore software, and maybe I'm the only one with this problem, remeber I'm using the Mac version.

When I make a Bluray everything is perfect the menus, buttons, the navigation highlights for the buttons, all come out the color they are supose to be. When I make a DVD the problem I encountered 100% of the time is the "DVD menu button highlights" come out so messed up. Some colors for the highlights want even display on the TV your watching it on. Then some colors look sketchy or dashed istead of solid, real "glitchy looking". Blurays handle any highlight color correctly and represent the way the supose to on the TV your watching. Please note if you watch a DVD you made on a laptop or computer the highlights come out correctly. If yo watch the DVD you made on a NTSC tube tv, HD ready projection tv, HD DLP projector, or a LCD TV the button highlights do not display correctly, and sometimes don't display at all.

I even ran a test by just using the preset menus in encore and I used the ones that are not specified as HD and I get the same problem. I did not chage the titling or anything except I set navigation to the buttons. In my finding I have found a work around that appears to work 100% of the time. Use black or white highlights, rgb value 0,0,0 or 255,255,255. These work everytime but if I use any color other than these two problems, problems, problems!

Talked with an adobe agent on the phone and he did a remote screen to see my screen and everything I'm doing is correct. They seem to not know of this. Has anyone had this problem, if not let me know what your doing.

This has been a long time problem with Encore on the Mac (Snow Leopard usually).

Many people have fixed this problem by changing the button highlight in Photoshop from (=1) to (=3). This will obviously limit what you can do with button highlights as you will only be able to use the (=3) Highlight color group, but might give you something that works.

Thanks Jon, I'll try that. I'm glad to know It's nothing I'm doing. Later today I'll do a test with that and let you know of my results. I'll sign back in tonight with results.

              Jon,

Going back to Snow Leopard, word had come down, supposedly from Apple, that a "fix" was in the works. I had almost forgotten about that issue, until this post. Am I correct that with what, after a full OS release, plus its updates, things are still wonky in Mac-land? That is not a good thing for the Mac-users, IMHO.

Maybe it hasn't been as long as I am thinking, but still, it's been awhile.

              Good luck to all,

I just had a customer recently who was having issues with the buttons not showing up on a TV, but would show up when played back on a computer.

They had the latest Quicktime, Snow Leopard and CS5. The only solution was to change the button highlight from (=1) to (=3).

                  Dang,

Guess that the problem is still around. Thanks for helping the OP, and bringing me up to date.

Of course it wasn't my system and I couldn't confirm myself that the latest Snow Leopard was installed along with the latest Quicktime, but thats what I was told.

Hey gus wanted to thank both of you for your input. I changed all my highlights to (=3) and "wala" it works! Total fixed the problem!!!

Seems to me it's not a mac thing as much as it's a programing thing. If they had this problem in the past and it is still a problem on CS5 would'nt it be nice to let everyone know that has bought a mac version. I wasted about 4 1/2 hours scratching my head and on the phone with support. I guess that makes it look lke their error and they don't want to do that. You guys helped me better than anything! I whish I would have thought to post this as soon as I found the problem. Seems like Adobe would make a patch for this. I know DVD only has a few more years before Bluray total takes over the disc market but it's here to stay for a little while.

But all in all I would not edited or produce video any other way than Adobe. I started on Adobe and I'll end with Adobe. They make a solid product other than this one bug that has a work around.

                        James,

I would suggest filing a Bug Report on this. Adobe takes those very seriously, and would also suggest that you provide all details, so that Adobe can replicate it in the lab.

                        Good luck,

I just filed a bug report for the same issue. My solution was to copy the project to a PC, and burn the DVD from there, so I didn't test the (=3) solution, but good to know for future projects. Hopefully adobe will release an update or patch soon. I see this thread is from July, so it's been a while.

The (=3) methos as talked about on the above messages works perfectly. I reported a bug with that issue as well, but never heard from any one or seen any updates yet, and that's been months. Below is the soltion that has worked for me and my Mac.

I've found that if you work on your menus only in photoshop using the (=3) solution then you'll have no problems at all 100% cure for the problem.

It seems to me that Encore for Mac also has issues with glitches. I found if you start noticing a lot of glitches or problems delete your prefrence folder. The next time you open Encore it will act as though it's the first time you opened it. This reboots the program, in laymen terms. It will make a new clean preference folder. So now I only use encore to create the Blu-ray or DVD not to create menus!

Want to speak about glitches I have a few. Number one, it will not save motion menu renders for Blu-ray at all. If you close the program and re-open your blu-ray project it will have to re-render the motion menus everytime, why, why???... Number 2 if you make one project to make blu-ray and DVD's it will not save the transcodes for the DVD, it will for the Blu-ray side but not the DVD. My fix for number 2 is export to mpeg2-DVD in either premiere or the adboe encoder, and make a seperate project for DVD using that. Also I do this for blu-ray I export in encoder for mpeg2-blu-ray and make a seperate blu-ray project, this has worked great for me everytime. So basically don't so anything in encore except make discs and don't do any constrcution other than make this links for the menu buttons to your content. If you stick to this encore will give you no prolems, guarenteed, of course this applies to Mac intel based computers. And I'm running the latest Apple updates if anyone is wondering.

And one last note. It just seems to me that if you do to much construction within encore you result in corrupting your prefence folder. This will lead to major glitches. So if you've been experinceing problems with your encore, do what Adobe has told me DELETE YOUR PREFERENCE FOLDER. This will reboot your encore program. And only use encore to create Blu-rays and DVD not to design menus or transcodes. Do all your construction in photoshop and make your transcodes in encoder using the mpeg2 format for DVD and Blu-ray (this will give you the best quality, stay away from H.264. H.264 is good for internet only it reallys sucks in quality for discs.). Doing all this will make life very sweet for you.

I had the same problem, and I spent over 2 days to figure it out..

My highlights worked perfectly on my main menu, but when I navgigated into a sub menu the highlights would not show up at all..

I found out that main menu was set to 16x9 , but my sub menu was set to 4x3. So when you mix to aspect ratios, the highlight will not work as they should..

Hope this sollution could help someone...

I have been experiencing the same exact problems with encore, but I use (=1) (=2) and (=3) for the project. Is there anyway to still use all 3, or do I have to go to one?

You could build your project on a PC... then you could use all 3.

                                    Some thoughts on that paragraph.

Whilst I could not agree more that it is better by a long, long way to create all assets to DVD or BD compliant outside of Encore (we've known this for years now here) I would certainly argue heavily about MPEG-2 being better for BD.

                                    Er, no.

                                    It isn't.

H264 is a container, very much like aVI is a container, and MOV is a container.

It tells you NOTHING about what the quality of the final encoding is like. You can havbe H264 for interweb, truly, and a file that is 7Mb for T'Interweb will be around 200Mb done to BD H264 standards. As usual, it is all down to starting with the right assets and preparing them in the right way.

MPEG-2 is a bad joke compared to a well made H264 or AVC file - not for nothing has it been suggested that MPEG = Moving Pictures by Educated Guesswork, and I can assure you a properly coded H264 will blow any MPEG-2 file away

Yes, I'm experiencing this same issue now with the CS 5.1 or 5.5 what ever it is. The latest update. What ever came with CS5.5. It's making me crazy.
