    Creating an editable region for a table cell

    SweetEngineer
      I am assisting a friend of mine in learning Dreamweaver. Because he's new to this and has no knowlegde of CSS yet, I am starting him out with a table layout. We both have DW 8 installed on our Macs with the latest Apple operating system for 10.4.

      When I select a cell by clicking the <td> tag at the lower left of the window and set the entire cell to be an editable region, I see an entire area inside the cell available to me for adding content. But when he does the same procedure, his display shows a very small window that expands as he types or adds information. It does not expand the width of the entire cell.

      Is there a setting in Preferences that is causing the different behaviors? I can figure out why he is not getting the entire selected as editable as I am. Help!

      Thanks!

          Can you post a link to web page you guys are working on? We can't help you without "seeing" the web page you are talking about. Please post it as in " http:// ..." to an example page, that is.

            We don't have a web page yet. He's just learning how to create a page. I'm asking about the development process and how to make an entire table cell editable.

              Ok, do you a book that comes with your Dreamweaver 8 package? use that book. Or use Help interface around Dreamweaver 8.

              Say, what system architecture you and your friend are working on? I am with Mac OSX platform.

                If you have manaul book that come with your package, Dreamweaver 8: Getting Started with Dreamweaver, please refer to tutorial: creating a table-based page layout, staring page 53... and go from there.

                  Editable regions are not layout devices. The will not constrain the
                  position or appearance of anything you put into them. If you click in a
                  cell and insert an editable region, you will be able to insert as much
                  content as you want into that editable region without any problem. You
                  should therefore not worry about the size of an editable region on DW's
                  display since it cannot affect your layout presentation.

                  However, one must distinguish between this -

                  <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="test" --><td>whatever</td><!--
                  InstanceEndEditable -->

                  and this -

                  <td><!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="test" -->whatever<!--
                  InstanceEndEditable --></td>

                  which I suspect may be what you are seeing. Can you tell me which one you
                  have and which one your friend has?

                    Bingo! I think you hit the nail on the head. What I see is:

                    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="test" --><td>whatever</td><!--
                    InstanceEndEditable -->

                    and what I believe he sees (I never thought to look at his code, since he doesn't really know HTML yet):

                    <td><!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="test" -->whatever<!--
                    InstanceEndEditable --></td>

                    It makes a difference because it appears that he is limited to a small area while my display shows me the full width of the cell.

                    What puzzles me is since we're both using Mac 10.4 and Dreamweaver 8, as I mentioned in my initial question, what's causing the differences?

                    Thank you!

                      It would not limit what you can put in the cell in any way since template
                      regions cannot affect page rendering.

                      One of you is selecting the <tr> tag and inserting the editable region. The
                      other is selecting the <td> tag and inserting the editable region, perhaps.
                      The best way, however would be to just click IN the cell and insert the
                      editable region.

                        No, we're both selecting the <td> tag. His editable region ends up inside the cell while mine covers the entire cell. Besides, Dreamweaver will not allow you to make multiple cells editable. We have have 3 columns per row so selection of the <tr> does not explain how the editable region ends up in the middle cell of the row.

                        Thanks.

                          You click in the cell, then you select <td> on the QuickTag Selector, then
                          you use INSERT | Template Objects > Editable Region?
