1. Re: Saving Captivate 5 as Captivate 4?
Captiv8r Jul 13, 2010 2:16 PM (in response to frank_hibbard)Hi there
Nope, sorry...
Captivate projects have always only been forward compatible and don't offer any ability to save as an older format as you might be able to with Word or PowerPoint.
Cheers... Rick

Stimpski Dec 20, 2010 12:10 PM (in response to frank_hibbard)Captivate 5 not being able to save files as Captivate 4 - I'm sorry Adobe, but this is really really not good at all. Bad form. Is pretty much a deal breaker for further use.

3. Re: Saving Captivate 5 as Captivate 4?
David_at_CU Feb 21, 2011 1:02 PM (in response to Stimpski)I agree this is bad form.
I understand the policy of forward but not backword compatibility, however in the case of Captivate I agree this is particularly bad form, because there are so many problems with C5 and Adobe doesn't appear to be addressing them in a timely manner. For instance, C5 cannot export to MS-word 2011 docs for Mac, and in Windows the Step-by-Step exports are nearly useless. I might be able to overcome many of the problems if I could save to V4.

Andrew Flatgard Aug 22, 2011 7:12 AM (in response to frank_hibbard)Does anyone know if backward compatibility is possible between Captivate 5.5 and 5.0?
Thanks!

5. Re: Saving Captivate 5 as Captivate 4?
David_at_CU Aug 22, 2011 8:12 AM (in response to Andrew Flatgard)CS5.5 appears to be fully backward compliant with C5 in both Windows and Mac versions. I can't confirm that all the features and functionality are backward compatible, but I have several projects I started in C5 and they work well (in fact better) in C5.5.
C5.5 fixes most of the serious publish to print issues I was having in C5.
The exception is the way C5.5 handles highlight boxes for the step-by-steps (File>Publish>Print type=Step by Step). Although a big improvement from C5, One can now see the object below the highlight box instead on an opaque highlight box. The remaining problem is that the fill and stroke effects that are applied to the highlight box also appear in the step-by-step document. This makes for a difficult to reach step-by-step guide. The work-around is to set fill to 0% and stroke width to 0 before publishing. Then, after you have published a good step-by-step guide, go back and reset these values as your project dictates, before publishing as media, flash, etc.

Andrew Flatgard Aug 22, 2011 8:23 AM (in response to David_at_CU)Thanks David,
Is there a way to open a Captivate 5.5 project in Captivate 5? I tried and got an error message.

7. Re: Saving Captivate 5 as Captivate 4?
David_at_CU Aug 22, 2011 9:01 AM (in response to Andrew Flatgard)No, Captivate 5.5 projects cannot be opened in Captivate 5, only the other way around.
C5.5 can open C5 and C4 projects though, so that's another big improvement. THANKS ADOBE !
(although C4 projects (at least in Mac) seem to lose any close captioning you may have created when converted to C5.5)
Also, when opening an older Captivate with C5.5 plan on it taking awhile. The older versions are converted to 5.5 as they are imported. If you make any changes you must save as 5.5 ---
If I were you, I would upgrade to C5.5 and abandon any further use of C5. C4 was a sound product and thus far, for me, it appears C5.5 is sound. C5 is riddled with issues, particularly for Mac, but the Windows version has several problems too.

9. Re: Saving Captivate 5 as Captivate 4?
RodWard Apr 16, 2013 7:50 AM (in response to sabrinasig25)Yes. Captivate 6 files cannot be saved to 5.5 format. But good news is on the way. Captivate 6.0 or 6.01 users CAN open Captivate 6.1 files and vice versa. Maybe Adobe is finally listening to the many requests for backward compatibility.
