    Sequence Playback Error PP CS4

    R-Cole Community Member

I have encountered a strange error and I am not sure what caused it. I have a project with 6 individual sequences (no nesting). On 2 of the 6 sequences I am unable to play the video from the timeline. The other 4 still play fine. I have been editing this project for several weeks and each of the sequences worked properly until today. Regardless of whether I hit the space bar or click the play button it doesn't budge. The play triangle turns to the stop square for about 1 second as if it wants to play but it switches back to the play triangle without moving or making a sound. I also do not hear the audio during scrubbing.

The only thing I did that was new was to apply my default audio transition to an entire audio track in two of the sequences. The error happened immediately after and I can't figure out how to switch it back. I highlighted the audio track that consists of one source file that was split numerous times and selected "Sequence- Apply Default Transitions to sequence" which did what it was supposed to do.

Can anyone tell me what setting I have mistakenly changed and how do I get it back to function properly. Let me know if I missed any pertinent data.

Specs on the footage and computer.

MXF files (720pn) on 1 timeline, an AVI file (24pa squeeze) in another plus one wav file from a digital recorder all in a DV-24p Widescreen 48khz sequence.

Editing on a Sager laptop 64 bit windows 7 with the core i7 720qm, 8GB RAM and 2x 500GB drives.

Thanks in advance for any help.

So while waiting for a reply I decided to do some more trouble shooting. If the group transition was the issue then maybe if I deleted them I would regain playback. So I started going through one by one (I had about 40 or 50 in one sequence) and deleting the audio transitions. A little ways into it I noticed I had a transition spanning over two clips that were not enabled since I was using the audio at that time from a different track. I then had a hunch that maybe the issue is transitions over clips that are not enabled. So I skimmed through and plucked out the unnecessary transitions and bingo was his name-o. I did the same thing for the other sequence that had the same issue and it now plays. So as a test I went into a working sequence and split an inactive audio clip, applied the transition and guess what; no playback.

Makes perfect sense in hindsight but obviously never would have saw it coming. So to any that come across this issue check for inactive clips with transitions between them. Transitions from enabled to not enabled works fine, just two not enabled clips creates the issue.

          Thanks for reading!

            Nice catch, Cole.

A slightly different work flow can also help eliminate the issue.  Instead of disabling the clips, move them to a different track and mute the track.
