Reducing size of source files while I learn what I'm doing?

While I'm learning I'm shooting lots of footage much of which ends up being unusable. This is causing me to use up LOTS of disk space.

I understand that PPro doesn't allow me to directly trim a source file, so if I want to reduce a 5 minute file to the 30 seconds that I want to keep, is the best option to create a timeline and export the 30 second clip to a new file and then manually delete the original 5 minute file?

Or is there a better tool to reduce the size of the file before I work with it in PPro?

My source files are mostly AVCHD.
