Multiple Program Files / Multiple Photoshop CS4 Programs

    EckleySP Community Member

      I hate this.

On a machine running Intel i7 processor (6G of Ram) I upgraded from XP 32 bit to WIN 7 (64).  I was running an old version of Photoshop (maybe CS4) then (perhaps) reinstalled after the upgrade to CS4.

I have two Program Files folders and each has an instance of Photoshop:

      Program Files\Adobe

         - Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit)

      And,

      Program Files (x86)

         - Adobe Photoshop CS4

I can only guess that when I installed Win 7, it kept the old CS4 and then I installed CS4 for 64 bit.  If I go into Uninstall Programs and begin to uninstall the ONE instance of Photoshop CS4, I can tell that the one that is being executed is the Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit).

I'm at a point where the C drive is getting full, and to make matters worse (depending on your perspective) I have downloaded CS5 and would like to install it, but need to 'clean' up what I have first.

Not that anyone would have actually done all of this, but my inclination is to uninstall my ONE instance of CS4 - all programs in the suite.  I don't know if that will get rid of the extra installations.  There's also Lightroom, Premiere Pro, Midia Encoder, etc. in the Program Files (x86) folder  In the folder where I think I am actually executing Photoshop, I only see Llightroom.  That means that I'm executing Photoshop (and maybe Lightroom) in the Program Files folder and all the rest of the suite in Program Files (x86) folder.

So, the question is:   If I completely uninstall Adobe CS4 and there remains some Adobe programs in either Program Files folders, you think I can just delete them?

      Any other suggestions?

This is normal, on 64bit operating systems Photoshop CS4 and newer is installed in two locations, in Program Files goes the 64bit version and in Program Files (x86) goes the 32bit version. You can uninstall only the 32bit version if you want but note that 32bit plug-ins don't work in the 64bit version so if you have some older 3rd party plug-ins that haven't been updated to support the 64bit version then you might want to look elsewhere for free space. Also, a few minor features aren't available in the 64bit version like File->Import->Video Frames to Layers which can be used to fool CS4 into opening animated GIF files with their animation intact.

Thanks for the info, but I don't see how I can uninstall only the 32 bit version.  In the program folder where I think it resides, there's no application for uninstalling that version.

You don't need a special uninstaller, just use the Photoshop CS4 uninstaller from the Control Panel though i might be confusing the CS4 and CS5 uninstallers so don't bite my head of if it doesn't work

I don't have a choice in uninstalling all of CS4 - regardless of where they reside.  Hopefully, the Uninstall Program will figure it out.

If you hear a loud ARRGGGG from the Atlanta Area, it will be me putting a curse on the whole Windows World, not me biting on anything.

I'll report back unless the PC is dark, and silent (other than the spitting of sparks and flames from it's insides).

                Sometime Later . . .

OK, all of the uninstalls seems to have uninstalled everything in all locations.

                I still hate this.

                Sometime Later Still

I still don't have enough space on C: to install -  not according to Adobe Knowledge that says I need 24 GIG.

Any ideas about putting it on another internal drive?

You want to hex the entire WIndows world when you are unwilling to pay 1/4 the price of Photoshop for a new disk drive?

Take the time to make a BUNCH more space available on drive C:.  Windows is going to grow and other things are just going to fill it anyway.  Trying to run with too little space on C: is a time bomb just waiting to go off.

By the way this free program (Scanner) makes it pretty easy to see where your space has all gone...

500 GB and 1 TB hard drives are pretty inexpensive now. Hint hint.

I have terebytes of storage for the video and pic files.  I just have a 250 GIG drive for Windows and programs -  nothing else is on it except the junk that builds up from using the system and going online.

And, I know the pentaties for runninging out of space on C:, which is why I'm trying to figure out my next step.

I'll check out the link, but I've been through the programs and I'm not sure anything else can be removed.  Even if it could, it wouldn't free up much space.  In addition to the the Adobe 'stuff', I also write music, so there's quite a bit of sequencer and sample programs on the machine.
