Templated final works in DW8, but not DWCS3

    rossmgreenberg Level 1
When I access the template at this address:
      http://www.bovinaupchurch.org/Templates/xyz.dwt with Dreamweaver8, no
      problem whatsoever.

However when I try to access it using Dreamweaver CS3 I get only the
"spackle" background with nothing else. Other templated sites with other
templates work without a problem; so what is so peculiar about this
      template?

This particular site has been up and operational for a few years. I cut
this template only as an example of my current problem.

What is the problem and how do I resolve it? Is it a problem with the site,
the template, CS3 or the phase of the moon?

      Thanks!

      Ross

Sorry I can't pin point it - but as the code is a mixture of html /
xhtml - some upper case some lower case - it is not so easy to read.

Maybe a good idea to look at this -

          http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bovinaupchurch.org%2FTemplate s%2Fxyz.dwt

as you have lots of xhtml already - - just convert the rest and put in
a xhtml DOCTYPE and it might be easier to pin point the problem.

in Dw File | convert will do the lot for you.

It will put in the Doc type,
          correct errors such as

          changing this
          <script language="JavaScript">

          to
          <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">

You suggestions make good sense: I sort of inherited this template and your has a lot of things that need to be fixed up!

However I did not expect that fixing up this template -- and who knows what else? -- be a requirement in order for me to use DW CS3!!

On until I fix up, CS3 is entirely useless to me -- I can not even saying that pages that I was able to see/modify/etc. in DW8.

Is there a "backwards compatibility mode"?

(Please forgive me for some of the senseless things that I may have posted: I use Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition, which is not 100% accurate, and I post sometimes before I correct what I call "speako's" as opposed to "typo's")

CS3 is a stickler for valid code. If your code is broken, CS3's display
will be broken too. And it should be.

No of course not - but having good valid code is a very good starting
point and makes it easier to maintain.

As Murray says Dw CS3 is rather stricter - and that in my humble
opinion is a good thing, because then you will have less trouble
making the site compatible with various browsers.

You can still use Dw 8 to tidy it up and then try again with Dw CS3.

When installing Dw CS3 - you can keep Dw8 on the PC - but you can't
                  use both at once.
