'Special' characters in Director 11.5 text

I am working on a very large project that uses m-dashes, umlauted characters and the like. Font is plain old Arial, not embedded. All text blocks that contain characters with umlauts, acute marks and any m-dashes cause Director to crash! I have gotten around the m-dashes by removing them entirely (using hyphen instead.)

If I change the characters in question to a non-umlauted or acuted character it works fine (example change umlauted u to just plain u). As soon as I add the glyph mark back in, both Director and Projector crash when trying to display the text block. I am working primarily on a Mac, but the crashes occur on both Windows and Mac regardless of which platform was used to create the characters in the first place. Anyone else having this problem? Any known fixes?
