It is possible to specify the URL in the Open dialog of the client, why not from the command line?

I've never seen any evidence that this should work. Adobe have put huge effort into development efforts but not command lines (which Microsoft declared obsolete with Windows 95, though they have been slow to die). Perhaps 10,000 pages of documentation in the Acrobat SDK.
Most of the interfaces are to Acrobat, of course, not the free Reader.
