Dual layer disc burn failure (CS3) help please

    Danielpremiere Community Member

      Hi,

I am using CS3 to burn single layer DVDs without a problem. However I have been making a few projects which require dual-layer discs. I have been using, without problem, Arita RITEK dual layer discs boughts two years ago (2.4x speed). Having almost run out of these, my boss bought me some Infiniti 8x discs, and these have all failed - perhaps 1 worked, I'm not sure. (I only had the option to write at 8x). The drive is a Lite-On DH16A1L (firmware KH 37) and I am running Windows XP SP2. [Failure message: Encore unable to complete because of a hardware error (Sense Code 52102)]

I wasn't sure whether it was the brand, so I ordered some Philips 2.4x but when they arrived they were 8x. These also failed (though on these there was the option to burn at 4x, 6x and 8x) I tried both 4x and 8x.

It seems that it is difficult to obtain max 2.4x speed discs - spent 15 minutes on-hold trying to check with a manufacturer that that is actually what they would send if I ordered them, but I had to get back to my editing without speaking to anyone!

So - people have suggested updating my Firmware, however on the update page, I see *Warning - only compatibly with Windows Vista*

I am now thinking of getting a new DVD burner that should be compatible with 8x DVDs (perhaps a Plextor PX-880SA) - I know that Plextor are supposed to be the best. Can anyone suggest if this is the best course of action?? I would rather use these 8x discs than try to track down diminishing supplies of 2.4x

I have read a forum which suggests you should only burn dual-layer at 2.4x but how do I ensure this if I can't get the discs?

      Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

      Thanks

      Daniel

Have Encore create an ISO on your hard drive, then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write to disc

Imgburn should allow you to burn at a slower speed... it will also tell you the actual brand of the blank

I've read in these forums that Verbatim dual layer is best

            Hi,

Firstly many thanks for the reply. But that's a workaround rather than a solution to direct burning in Encore which is what I would prefer to do. Does anyone know whether the purchase of a new (Plextor?) drive as I suggested would help?

Since posting my original message, I had indeed thought of writing an Image and then burning using Imgburn, which is what I am now trying. Of course there is now the issue of setting a layer break, which Encore automatically did. Imgburn gave me 4 options, one of which was "good" so I am trying that one. Will let you know how it turns out.

              Daniel,

I have never had one failure with Verbatim DL discs. I don't know the Infiniti, but know that recent Ritek discs, seem to be from many different mfgrs., like Memorex. They also not longer get the high recs., that they once did.

In another forum a user had a similar issue with Infiniti, and my searching seemed to indicate that they did have a good reputation. Still, changing to Verbatim blanks solved that user's issues.

              Good luck,

                Hi again,

I have ordered some Verbatim DL disks and also a new Plextor drive! I will try the Verbatim disks on my old drive, before I put the new drive in, but I don't think the existing DVD drive likes any disk over 2.4x speed. Using my Philips DL DVD disks, Imgburn would not successfully complete on 4 attempts (on the one occasion the burn completed but the verify failed) I kept getting the woman's voice "OH NO!" Hmm.

So I hope one of these things will solve my problems. I spotted a mistake on my dual layer project last night and used my *last* 2.4x disc to re-write the master. On the way to the duplicators now.

Will let you know what happens.

                Thanks

                Daniel

Just as a test ('cause they were really cheap) I bought a sale box of Memorex (Ritek) +DL at a local store

Using an ISO (of nothing that was really important) I used Imgburn and have created 3 discs with zero problems... all play back on the 3 drives I have connected to TVs (Magnavox & Toshiba & LG)

You either have a batch of REALLY bad discs, or your DVD writer is not functioning 100%

                    Hi,

Good news - I have received and installed my new Plextor drive. It succeeded first time using the same Philips discs that I had been trying with but had been failing using my old drive. Its seems the old drive it was only compatible with 2.4x speed discs in its existing state for some reason. I am looking forward to using the new drive together with Verbatim discs when they arrive!

the burn completed but the verify failed) I kept getting the woman's voice "OH NO!" Hmm.

ImgBurn is a great little utility. The humor coded into it is also entertaining, like the "Oh No!" Always read the error messages completely, and you will likely get a good laugh. Some days, when I am bored, I will launch the program, and do something wrong, just to get the error messages. Things like, "Obviously, you do not know what you are doing. Sit back, and I will do them for you, the correct way... "

About the only thing straight forward in the entire program is the little musical "Ta-Da!" when things go well. I'm surprised that one does not get that lady, with something like, "though you did almost everything wrong, I was able to get you a good burn - SUCCESS!"

Good luck with the Verbatims and the Plextor. I have one of those units, plus an LG, on my workstation, and have not issues. Do check the version of the firmware, when you install the burner. Plextor updates those pretty often. Also, pay close attention to the firmware installation instructions. Seems that Plextor requires a bit more work, than my LG (could be reversed, but one is a straight EXE and the other needs a bit more).
