btw, premiere has literally started playing up today, after a month of being fine

Editing with a USB drive does not work... you need eSATA or Firewire800 to use an external drive
You need at least one, two is better, more internal hard drives... configured according to Harm's message
Maybe as your project has evolved it has grown larger and you have lots of preview render files happening. (these will be on your HDDs)
You have an external HDD and an internal..
The USB external will be slow because of its connection.
The internal is smallish and also running your operating system as well as your application. You need dedicated internal HDDs for media etc.
You dont have enough RAM

I agree with both John T, and Craig. There comments should be taken to heart.
Now, two additional things to think about are:
How much defragmented free space do you have on your C:\ drive. If it is filling up, you will take a direct performance hit at about 75% full, and the performance will continue to slow down, as it fills more, getting towards possible failure.
Check the file size of your PRPROJ (your Project) file. Has that grown in size, and is not much larger than the AutoSaves, or larger than similar Projects? There is a Bug, that can cause the Project file to bloat, and this will slow things down greatly. Adobe is working on a fix for this. After the slowdown, comes the inability to even Open that Project.
If you suspect the latter, see this THREAD for more info.
Hi, thanksfor all your help, I have got a new HDD and it is all organised nicely according to Harm
ms article.Pro is still acting really slow. I have defragmented, and I will reboot now just incase but something just doesn't seem right. If it was working on $GB ram before, why isn't it now. The project hasn't bloated, it is the same size as the autosaves(106mb). Anymore suggestions, other than more ram, more ram is on the way!
*4GB ram, sorry
Right so now i have upgraded my RAM to 8. specs are
intel quad core 2.6ghz,
8 GB RAM 6400,
2 x 500GB internal drives 7200rpm
512mb graphics card
external drive 1TB USB
I've spread the load between the drives. Using the external for back up and footage that isnt being worked on. Exports also go into the external.
This project still keeps crashing when it comes to exporting. I tested the memory to see if it was dud and it passed, hard drives seem fine so i can't work out now why it still persists to misbehave.
Try exporting a test to the internal drives.
BTW: I think USB is too slow and is causing a bottleneck. (How far into the export does it get before it crashes?)
No it's gone past that point now. Now im having difficulty getting project to even open, let alone play, let alone export. This is quite stressful, Im getting the 'not responding message' after I have clicked open project. But... it will open other projects, it's just the one ive been working on lately. What i have noticed though is that the project file was 106mb, now its, 50mb and I dont see a correlation as to why. the footage hasnt been drastically cut.
Time to open the backup file.
OK Thanks for that bit of advice, Ive done just that and it seems
to be alright for now...any ideas on how to avoid that in the future?
1st : make sure you keep backups regulalrly. (as you did) The crashes may have corrupted your original.
Now try an export to an internal drive of part of your timeline.
How long or when was it before it crashed previously?
It started today, I had a little fiddle with
titles and then tried to export say 7
or 8 hours ago and it was freezing up then.
I am trying to establish when it happened in the export process. eg as soon as it started exporting or while it was rendering, just before it finished....etc)
More important...what happens if you export to an internal drive???
well I hav been working on a back up, but now, when i click file>export>media, it freezes and has to cloe down. very odd. not even getting to select what drive.
