Do states take up a lot of memory

I'm considering using a lot of states for various "button" events.  I'm finding the states easy to work with, but I'm worried that they might take up a lot of memory.  Althernatively I'll write some custom classes in AS to do the same thing, but using states could give me a nice kick start with my development.

I can't imagine that states themselves take up much memory at all; they seem to be shortcuts for arrays of properties (visible, alpha, etc) for objects that would exist in some form or another anyway. Of course, if you have a 10GB component in one state, it would be the object itself that takes up the memory. Just a guess.
