CS3 - Adjusting Left and Right Channels of an Audio Track Separately
Mindbreak.net Aug 13, 2010 3:16 AMI'm expecting this to be an extremely stupid question. I know how to do it in Avid and FCP, but for the life of me can't figure it out in Premiere. I've cut a clip and laid it on the timeline. Now I'd like to adjust the audio levels of the clip INDEPENDENTLY, but there is only one line going through the audio clip, and it adjusts both the L and R channels simultaneously. Nowhere, not even in Track Properties, can I select only the L channel or only the R channel and bring that channel up or down a little without affecting the other. The L and R are grayed out and not selectable. The properties of the clip show that it's stereo, the project settings are stereo, and I haven't been able to find any info about this problem in the forums here or in the Help tool. Except for something I came across that said you have to go into the Master Clip settings and create 2 Mono tracks from the stereo track BEFORE you place it on the timeline, but that would be insane to have to do that for each and every stereo clip you ever import! Plus that makes no sense - "mono" means the 2 channels are identical, how can you have two "mono" channels? What would be the purpose, you only need one "Mono" channel to go to your 2 speakers. And I wouldn't want each channel to be made mono anyway, I want the L channel only to go to the Left side and the R channel to only go to the Right side! Maybe they're mis-using the word "mono"? Or maybe I'm an idiot and just not getting something (more likely).
Anyway, I'm really confused here, mostly because I just can't believe you'd have to go through all these extra steps for every single stereo clip you ever work with... I must be missing something really simple, right?
IN SUMMARY:
I capture an HDV stereo clip
I load it to the Source window
I mark an in point and an outpoint
I insert my clip onto the timeline
I notice the left audio channel is too high and right audio channel is too low
How do I lower the left channel and raise the right channel?
Stupid question, I'm sure.
In Avid or FCP you go to the audio level 'line' going through the center of each channel and adjust at your leisure
