    Flash Import

    nsamaster
Hey everyone, I have run into a little snag.

To start, I will explain what I have done, just to get an idea of what is going on. I recently acquired a copy of Creative Suite 3 Web Premium and am using Flash+Dreamweaver to work on a website. I created the banner on the top of the page using Flash and the movie works the way I want without problems. I exported the movie as a *.swf file.

Now using Dreamweaver, I created the base template for all my pages on the site, and imported the flash movie into the template and made it a non-editable region for further pages. I tested the page and everything is working the way I would like it to. So now I have created 4 pages based off the template and everything is working great and fine.

So after some work, I realize I wanted to change something in the flash movie. So I open Flash, make my changes, save and export (this time to a different name so if I do not like the changes I can go back to the original). I go back into Dreamweaver, open up the template file, delete the old flash insert, import the new one, "Save" it and it updates all 4 pages. I test the template, and the flash video plays like it should. However, when I open up any of the pages I made off of the template, the new movie no longer plays. I have compared the code from the pages to the template to see if there was variance in the code that it wasn't calling something, or a file was missing, but everything is where it is supposed to be, and for the life of me I cannot get the new flash video to play in any of those HTML files that I made based off the template file.

What am I doing wrong? I am not a complete novice at Dreamweaver and flash, but the last time I used it was MX2004, so maybe there is something in this new version I am missing? All help is greatly appreciated and I will answer any question I can. Thanks again.

Blow is the flash insert code for the template and one of the pages based off of the template.

What folder on the server contains your Scripts folder & script?

You have different paths on the working & non-working pages

          <script src="../Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js"
          type="text/javascript"></script>

          <script src="Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js"
          type="text/javascript"></script>

If the pages are in the same folder, only one of these script call paths is
          correct.

Yea, I saw that. The flash file directory also seemed to not match as well. I fixed both of them and it still does not work. Attached is the new code for each page.

The file structure is like this:

            ../index.html
            ../Flash/banner_menu_space.swf
            ../Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js

How can this be true? index.html is usually at the root level of the site.
Your link shown herewould have it one level above.

Also, the two code snippets below look identical to me.

Anyhow, you may be able to fix things by making your links all root relative
              instead of document relative.

The index is in the root directory, perhaps I did not type it out correctly. This is what it is:

                ../web_root/index.html
                ../web_root/Flash/banner_menu_space.swf
                ../web_root/Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js

I know the files look identical, and that is what I do not understand. I literally cut and pasted exactly like they appear in their respective files.

I do belive that all the links are in respect to the root directory, but I could be wrong. I will double check and post an update on monday when I get back into my office.

                  OK:

The way I had it currently imported was relative to the document, like you said. I re-imported the file and made it relative to the site root, and now neither the template file or any of the individual HTML files play the flash banner. Perhaps there is a piece of code somewhere that I need to put in that Dreamweaver is not?

                  Thanks again for everyones help.

I have been using the standard insert media flash forever, now it does not work for my pages too. Using DW8. Not sure if MX2004 ever added the Script folder with script (Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js) I sure don't remember. What's going on?
                          • 11. Re: Flash Import

                            WORKAROUND???? You tell me.

                            <script src="Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

The script source folder has to be in the same directory as the page as the page with the inserted flash (swf). It doesn't seem correct to me that it would behave like this but it worked for me. The Scripts folder in the root directory (where it defaults) didn't work, its as if the swf could not find it or visa versa? So I will now put the script in all directories where I have flash swf files. Seem s redundant to me. If there is another more efficient way of doing it I'd like to know. FYI the page link here is 3 levels deep from the root directory http://www.mcctest.com/new_site/main_page/main.htm Check out the code.

No, it does not. The path to the Scripts folder can point to any location
in your site, as long as that's really where the script is.

                                > Seem s redundant to me

                                It is.

The page you link to in your post has the Scripts folder at the root level
of the site, while the page is three levels deep. That's what I'm telling
                                you.

What is it you are trying to show?

Has this issue been resolved? I am having the same issue as the original poster, and cannot for the life of me get a Flash .swf to display in Template referenced pages. VERY frustrating.

I believe I have found the problem, but am not sure how to work around... it appears that when DW creates a new page from Template it is removing the "../" from the Flash .swf address. What's up with that? Can't change it to the correct code, because it is behind a locked section, bummer!

See attached code for my personal code...

Where is the flash file? Where is the child page? (in your local site)
