This still exists in LCDS(formerly known as FDS). I have heard that it is not supposed to be used in production, but I don't think I would believe that.
LCDS = Live Cycle Data Services;
FDS = Flex Data Services;
Sure you can use it in production. It has the same pros and cons as it did in Flex 1.5.
The "presentation server" is now called the "web tier".
So, is this "web tier" shipped as a part of Flex 2.0? How much does the server license cost? Can it still generate SWFs from MXML on the fly?
LCDS is a separate product. It is free for a single cpu, significantly expensive for an enterprise-level implementation. You'll find the details on the Adobe site.
Yes, it generates/compiles the swf on the fly, wraps it in an html file, and returns it to the browser.
