1. Re: Cross-Media export in InDesign CS5
BobLevine Aug 20, 2010 7:40 AM (in response to JWH-NIRC)You can only save back to CS4 by using IDML. Why are you sending native files for print?
Best recommendation is to use PDF.

P Spier Aug 20, 2010 4:16 PM (in response to JWH-NIRC)You surely weren't using Cross-Media Export. That was for XML or HTML, which would have been of little use to the printer.

3. Re: Cross-Media export in InDesign CS5
JWH-NIRC Aug 20, 2010 5:16 PM (in response to P Spier)Right you are. It is the " Export —> InDesign Interchange" function that we need to communicate with our printers. If we shift to CS5 and cannot use Interchange to make them compatible with CS3 (none of them bothered with CS4), then there is no way we can make the shift. It is hard to believe that Adobe would just cut off backward compatibility, especially since this is such a standard feature of all typesetting programs...

BobLevine Aug 20, 2010 5:21 PM (in response to JWH-NIRC)They haven't cut off backward compatibility. InDesign has never been able to go back more than one version.

5. Re: Cross-Media export in InDesign CS5
P Spier Aug 21, 2010 3:01 AM (in response to JWH-NIRC)Printers who don't keep up with technology are not uncommon, and they usually don't survive these days. Can they handle PDF? That's the preferred method for file delivery in this century and makes the version of ID you use irrelevant.

6. Re: Cross-Media export in InDesign CS5
BobLevine Aug 21, 2010 5:40 AM (in response to P Spier)To be honest, I don't even know if the printers I use even have InDesign, or Quark, or Publisher or...well, you get the idea.
If they don't want my PDFs, they don't get my business.

7. Re: Cross-Media export in InDesign CS5
JWH-NIRC Aug 23, 2010 8:01 AM (in response to BobLevine)I understand the reasons for pressing one's printer to update, but our situation is a little different. For one thing, we work in various languages and have printers in several countries, including some in poorer parts of the world. For another, our staff has version 3,4, and 5 of InDesign and we work on each other's documents. We are not in a position to upgrade everyone at once and therefore prefer to work with backward compatability. I can go from 4 to 3 with no problem. So if CS5 could go from 5 to 4, then we would be in business. The features that might be forfeited do not concern us.

8. Re: Cross-Media export in InDesign CS5
BobLevine Aug 23, 2010 8:05 AM (in response to JWH-NIRC)All version of InDesign since CS2 can save back one version. Beginning with CS5 that must be done through an export to IDML.
