1. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
Harm Millaard Aug 22, 2010 3:26 AM (in response to jpodlesnik1)I have three points of critique:
1. The 950 is not worth the extra cost over a i7-930, which runs cooler, more efficient and is more attractively priced.
2. Forget about the Highpoint Rocketraid. It is not worth the money. Either use on-board ICH10R for striping, or get a real controller, which is significantly more expensive.
3. Consider another CPU cooler. Zalman is usually not the best performer and alternatives might be Scythe, TRUE, Noctua or Prolimatech.

Powered by Design Aug 22, 2010 4:49 AM (in response to jpodlesnik1)Are you going to do any HD.
If so get a different burner so you can do blu-ray too.

3. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
jpodlesnik1 Aug 22, 2010 8:11 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Thank you, Harm. I believe there's still time to make adjustments to my order on the cpu, cooler and RAID card. Will phone vendor first thing tomorrow morning. It's a $339 savings just swapping out the i7 950 for the i7 930. I appreciate your advice. :-)

4. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
jpodlesnik1 Aug 22, 2010 8:14 AM (in response to Powered by Design)Thanks for the reminder, Glenn. Actually, I forgot to mention this - I'm carrying over my Pioneer Blue-Ray drive from my current system over to the newly proposed one. The two 300 GB Velociraptor drives listed are carry-overs, too. Thanks!

John T Smith Aug 22, 2010 8:14 AM (in response to jpodlesnik1)>2 Western Digital 300 GB Velociraptor 10,000 RPM drives, configured in a striped RAID (only for apps)
I have read "some" other messages about problems with installing PPro/Encore to anything other than the default boot drive... usually the C: drive... so think carefully before you install to a different drive

6. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
jpodlesnik1 Aug 22, 2010 11:45 AM (in response to John T Smith)Thanks, John, for your input. I was wondering about that. I figure, with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit installed and all of my Adobe apps, we're talking 20GB. The drive is 80GB ... that should be enough storage space, yes? Thanks once again!

7. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
jpodlesnik1 Aug 22, 2010 11:48 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm, another question your way: With the changes you suggested implemented, would I be able to edit (in real-time) in PPro CS5 3K RED Scarlet footage, when the camera is released (2010/2011)? I realize I can lower the preview rez if need be. Editing 3K raw RED Scarlet footage in real-time is my ultimate goal at this point. Thanks.

8. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
Harm Millaard Aug 22, 2010 1:33 PM (in response to jpodlesnik1)Sorry, but I have no experience with Red material, so I'm not qualified to answer that.

I have Win7 64bit Pro + CS5 Master Collection + MS Office 2007 Pro + misc other "stuff" and I only use 40Gig... so 80Gig should be plenty

Todd_Kopriva Aug 22, 2010 6:39 PM (in response to jpodlesnik1)> would I be able to edit (in real-time) in PPro CS5 3K RED Scarlet footage...?
I can scrub smoothly through a transition between two 4K RED clips on a system that is similar but somewhat inferior to the one being discussed on this thread (my home computer).

11. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
jpodlesnik1 Aug 22, 2010 7:53 PM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Well, that's certainly good news, and I have my eye just on 3K raw footage (purportedly the equivalent to 16mm film). Good news. Hoping for the best. Thanks, Todd!

Powered by Design Aug 22, 2010 11:17 PM (in response to jpodlesnik1)Since he has his eye on Red footage does anyone think he should get the i7 980x ?
It cost more but those 6 cores might help.

13. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
jpodlesnik1 Aug 22, 2010 11:25 PM (in response to Powered by Design)Thanks for posing the question, Glenn. Remember that I'm looking to edit 3K raw (from up and coming Scarlet), not 4K from the RED One. I'll pose this question on the ScarletUser forum and see what they think. Thanks again.

Powered by Design Aug 22, 2010 11:35 PM (in response to jpodlesnik1)Its just that all the best scores on the PPBM5 site are using the new 980x
Those speeds look nice.
http://ppbm5.com/Benchmark5.html
I know my next system will have it.
my I7 860 is towards the bottom of the times at 692.0 but is OK but there sure is a difference in time.
Time and speed are worth it to me.
Just something to think about: GLenn

15. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
Harm Millaard Aug 22, 2010 11:36 PM (in response to jpodlesnik1)With the massive amounts of data from a Red, first priority would be memory. 24 GB being advisable. Second thing would probably be number of cores, but with the 980X being four times more expensive than the 930, it may be more economical to use remaining budget for better disk setup because that is where the data resides, both source and export.

Powered by Design Aug 22, 2010 11:40 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)what is the minimum number of drives to make raid worth wild Harm ?
Is the 2 Velociraptor drives enough ?

17. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
jpodlesnik1 Aug 23, 2010 12:02 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Thanks for that heads-up, Harm, as tomorow I was going to swap out the Asus P6X58D for the P6T WS Pro, but the P6X58D supports up to 24GB of memory. So regarding the motherboard, I'm staying with the original plan.
So we're talking about more drives attached to the RAID card you recommend, yes? The good news is by the time the RED Scarlet is released, I should have a disk set up for it. :-) Many thanks!

18. Re: Thoughts? Changes? Recommendations?
jpodlesnik1 Aug 23, 2010 12:05 AM (in response to Powered by Design)No, Glenn, those two drives will only comprise about 600 GB, not spacious enough for a decent amount of 3K raw footage. :-O The good news is I'll have a motherboard (I'm assuming) that will support a i7 980 (when I acquire it) and 24 GB of memory. :-)
