Crash (freeze) when scrubbing with audio

    Chris|Cousins

Hi - I'm getting frequent (say, every 10 minutes) crashes when scrubbing through a comp while holding down the Command key to preview audio, using AECS5 on a MacPro with OSX10.6. I've tried .aif, .wav and .mov fomats for the audio track with as many compressors as I can think of, I've tried using the built-in speakers and the front & rear line-out. This particular audio track is around 6mins long, there's only one track per comp and no keyframes on it - but I've had the problem with other audio files too.

Any clues? I've changed the audio hardware prefs to a range of values, 64-1024 buffer size and different audio outputs.

The crash is a freeze, not a quit, so no crash report comes up, although the OSX reporter does recognise the crash, here's the (cut down) info. Thanks for any help, it's driving me up the wall...

A bit more info, while I'm waiting for yet another restart -- the freezes seem to be when I leave the main AE comp, go and do something in a sub-comp then come back to the main comp. If I stick to the main comp window and do everything in there then AE seems to behave better, I can sometimes get, oooh, 30mins of work done before crashing.

I've put the full OSX activity sample here: here.

In the console I can see a lot of these:

          25/08/2010 01:54:35 WDDriveManagerStatusMenu[149] *** attempt to pop an unknown autorelease pool (0x819600)

Yup, that's 2am, and yup my deadline is tomorrow morning... Thanks for any assistance.

Do you have multiple monitors running? If so, albeit a pain, try working in only one. Also, try disabling OpenGL if you have it enabled. If you're viewing the waveforms for the audio files you're working with, is there any way for you to feasibly work without expaning the waveform? If not, can you zoom into your timeline so as to not create the need to draw large time blocks of the waveform? Do you have the most recent Wacom drivers installed? And, are you working off of local drives? on a network?

Everything else aside, have you tried recreating the prefs?

Thanks TimeRemapper - lots of questions.

Do you have multiple monitors running? Just the one.

Also, try disabling OpenGL if you have it enabled. Off, force of habit...

If you're viewing the waveforms for the audio files you're working with... The audio file is folded, I don't need to see the waveform

Do you have the most recent Wacom drivers installed? I've got the most recent RC.

And, are you working off of local drives? Local drives - it's reading from a RAID-0

Checking the console from earlier this evening, I've got pages and pages of these:

25/08/2010 00:48:53 After Effects[1212] *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x15503efa0 of class NSCFArray autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking

              Fun.

Is there any chance you can move the project to a different drive (not on that RAID - even the OS drive for testing purposes) and see if you still run into the problem? Do you have multi-processing disabled or enabled?

Is there any chance you can move the project to a different drive (not on that RAID - even the OS drive for testing purposes) and see if you still run into the problem? Well it's big comp but I've tried an archive project off a firewire drive, that stuttered and then crashed in the same way.

Do you have multi-processing disabled or enabled? Enabled usually, just tried without and the crash happened as usual.

Here's a not very informative video of the problem. Thanks for trying...

Dang. Well, I'm running short of ideas.

I'm figuring that the video you posted was for demo purposes only, and as such, this may not be an issue, but do you have a file suffix on your audio file? It looks like the one in your project window has no suffix ( .wav).

Just an update in case anyone's having the same issues - try cleaning out your Library/Quicktime/ folder, especially 3rd party codecs - it might have been down to a (video) codec called x264, I've removed that and it's a bit too soon to be sure, but seem to be having a better time.

Been working in 10.01 all day (with the x264 codec back in, not sure if that was the issue) - no audio crashes today, all working nicely - thanks for getting this sorted!

                          Cheers - Chris
