can connect, can't open, D'oh: Firewall

      Folks:

      MacOS 10.4.10, DW8

      This may help someone...

I just switched my DSL from static IP to dynamic IP, faster service. Initial testing showed everything is working OK, but when I fired up DW8, I could connect to all my existing defined sites, but I couldn't open the top-level folder. This was equally true for sites which use plain old ftp and for sites that connect with SFTP.

After I calmed down... I realized that I activated my Mac system firewall while wringing out the DSL change. D'oh! Turned that off, and now I can access my sites with DW8, no problem. I'm not certain why the firewall interferes with DW8 access. Plain old command-line ftp seems to work without any trouble with or without the Mac firewall activated. Also, I've got a h/w firewall on the router between this Mac and the Internet and it does not interfere.

      Anyway, it is fixed!

Connection problems are almost always related to some firewall intervention.
