Not Enough Free Storage Code: "25" Encore CS5 -Interesting Stuff found in their Log Files

      Blu-Ray Error.jpgBlu-Ray Error.jpg

I have tried for over a week to compile my video project.  Looked at the forums about this error.   Cleaned caches, removed transcodes, removed slide shows, chapter menus, eliminate using Premiere Projects inside of Encode and still I get this error. Everything but encore is working but I cannot produce a Blu-Ray.  OK Here are the facts:

I have successfully compiled and built a Blu-Ray once before using a Single Layer BD-R and BD-RE. But never a BD-RE Dual Layer

      My Current Project:

      Windows 7 64-bit

      Canon 7d AVHCD movie files 1080p 24p (1920x1080) Frame Rate 23.976

Compiled into 1 .m4v and .wav file though Adobe Premiere export total length 2hrs 54min and 16 seconds. Codec H.264 Blu-ray

      .m4v file size = 30,560,414KB

      .wav file size = 1,968,792KB

Premiere Auto Bit Rate setting for the files = 25 avg 30 max

      Encore Environment:

1 Timeline and 2 files mentioned above.  Both files list status as Untranscoded (which is what I expect)

Default Transcode settings Max Rate 30Mbps

Seen several posts on similar issues no response.  It would be nice to give us an explanation of this error so that I can at least do some deductive reasoning as to how to make a computing environment that can handle the instability of this product.  My parents are coming to town this Labor Day weekend, and I was going to surpise them with a Blu-Ray movie of our 2 two week road trip.  I guess now I will have to kick off a job tonight to convert to .wmv and hook the computer up to the big screen to watch it on Windows Media Player.  Yuk!

      Observation: 38.24GB < 50GB BD-RE dual layer.  Hmm.

OK, I found a log file in the cache folder that explains the bug. and it is a bug that makes sense.   Towards the bottom of the file, I see where the error occurred and the problem seems to relate how they break the files into the different layers for a DL BD-RE.  Looks like they overflowed Layer 1.  So the bug relates to how they partition the layers.  The .m2ts files are not split in the right place.  See log below:

Here is more information found on Blu-Streak Blu-Ray Software website about dual layer file layout:

            http://blustreak.dvdafteredit.com/setting-layer-break

            Quote: "

            Setting the layer break

When you create a new job in BluStreak Premaster, a window opens with header information and the output disc contents as a list of directories and files. The files on the final disc, whether burned or replicated, will always appear in the sequence shown. For single-layer discs, (25 GB or less), the sequence will almost always not matter.

            The Rules

For dual-layer, the files must be arranged such that both layers are 25 GB or less, and the first layer must be at least as large as the second. This also leads to the restriction that no single file can be larger than 25 GB. The rest of this description assumes that you have selected "Dual Layer" in the media format popup and that your project is larger than 25 GB and less than 50 GB. (Sizes are stated in decimal gigabytes).

            The Solution

In Blu-ray, 99% of the disc is taken up by the stream files (.m2ts). So you can pretty much ignore the other files when arranging the files to make a legal layer break, unless you have a large folder of ROM data. (Data not part of the actual Blu-ray disc, like original photos at full resolution).

            " End Qoute:

When I look at the BDMV folder that is created just before Encore Crashes, my file is ~34 GB.  Larger than the 25GB stated here.  Maybe this means instead of making one giant file, I should break up the files into segments and bring them into Encore as segments instead.  Could this fool Encore into keeping the m2ts files at a lower file size than 25Gb???  I will have to try this tonight.  I have my nuclear option going right now (converting to wmv format so my movie can be at least watchable)

Editorial Comment:  How come Adobe could not at least point us here.  Simple to troubleshoot.  Are you guys hiring?  I could probably fix this for you.

              This secret is unraveling...

Here is what I found on Adobe's website about Encore CS4 dealing with Layer breaks.  See the Note: section.

Specify a layer break for dual-layer DVDs

Dual-layer DVDs must have a layer break—the point at which the DVD player switches from the first layer to the second. Ideally, Encore creates the layer break (also called layer transition) between timelines or menus, making a smooth transition (since it jumps layers at a point where no content is playing). If it cannot find a spot that satisfies these requirements, Encore enables the Layer Break setting. When the Layer Break setting is enabled, you can specify the break manually, or let the software do it automatically.

Note: This option is not available for Blu‑ray discs.
              1. Choose File > Build, and choose the option corresponding to the type of DVD output to build.

              2. In the Disc Info section of the DVD Settings, make sure the disc’s Size is set to 8.54 GB Dual Layer.

              3. If the Layer Break setting is enabled, specify the type of layer break:

Ok - I have found the fix!

Yes, breaking up the files into something smaller than I guess 25 GB (I would keep breaking them up until it works) does work.  I have determined that for large projects and probably small projects I will import already transcoded files from Premiere Pro and NOT use the .pproj link within Encore.  So I took my 2hr and 54 minute film broke them up according by segments.  In essence, each segment was a chapter.  I then built the project and output the result to a blu-ray folder.  I did not use .iso because I am still having trouble with burning that onto a disk (yet another encore problem), but the burning of the folder seems to work.  Being a software engineer (this Adobe stuff is a hobby), there is nothing like having to do the same thing I do at work creep into my fun time.  I guess I can never avoid it.  Nothing like spending probably 40 hours last week for a problem that Adobe could have told me in one email would not work and the workaround was this.  Maybe they are short staffed or something.  If it were me, I would be checking in on this forum quite regularly to find out problems existing with my product.  What a great place to get bug and troubleshooting reports.

p.s.  This may take care of of other forum related questions about slide show sizes and stuff.  I have 14 different slide shows bundled with this movie each slide show has an audio track and 30-60 picture each.  The size of the slide show posed no problems with the workaround.

I solved this issue by sending the BR output to a folder.  I then used ImgBurn to make the ISO.  Now, I have never tried to burn media, so no idea

                  what would happen.

i found this to resolves this error as well, discs play perfectly fine, no problems.

Cool, this means your file was over 25gig, and it burned correctly with the layer break using the process of output to folder, make to an ISO with imgburn, and then burn with something like nero to disc?

I originally would import my entire movie as one segment.  This would cause the file size to go beyond the 25gb max.  So I broke my movies up into multiple segments.  As for burning an ISO I did NOT do that. Instead, I burned the the folder and its contents to the Dual Layer Blue-Ray Disc.  This seemed to have worked with both my computer Blu-ray player and my LG home blu-ray player.  I do not know what the ISO provides that a folder copy does not.  If anybody knows, I would be interested.

I just burned the folder. I created an iso from the folder though for archiving, and that burned fine as well.

                            2009/2010 Post!

I came here because I'm getting nowhere with my 35 gb+ burning project onto 50 gb DL. with imgburn. I had a succesful 23 gb unto rw single layer 25 gb BR. but I'm stuck,

The burning looks good and complete but the BR remains blanc ... I'm not too smart with all this but had no problems with DVD.

I have not heard b4 about 25gb max per layer could this be my problem?

Thanx. (This is an encore cs4 project send to a folder)
