Premiere Pro 2.0 crazy behavior in Windows 7

I have Premiere Pro 2.0 on a purchased disc.  Yes, it's old, but perfectly good for my purposes.  I was able to upload it into windows 7.  The program opens fine.  I can import projects made on my previous XP system.  So far, so good.  The problem occurs when I try to do anything with the video.

If I click on the timeline, the timeline turns white.  If I click on an effect, the effects window turns white.  If I click on the monitor, it turns white.  Waiting for things to return doesn't help.

I suppose that the answer is that Windows 7 is not Windows XP, but this is the first time I have ever seen a new system that wasn't back-compatible with previous versions. It's only 5 years, not Windows 98!!

If anyone has a solution to this, or even an explanation, I would appreciate hearing it.
