1. Re: How much loss in capturing from tape?
John T Smith Sep 4, 2010 6:50 PM (in response to seiurus)A Firewire transfer from tape to computer is a copy operation... so there is no loss of quality
Of course, those files are "about" 13Gig per hour for DV (I don't know the size for HDV) so sending a file to someone is going to mean several DVD's to write the files, in 4Gig segments, or copying to a USB hard drive and sending that back and forth

Bill Hunt Sep 5, 2010 10:45 AM (in response to John T Smith)I choose the external HDD transport method, and so far, it's worked well. I prefer that to either editing to the size of the DVD (even a DL), or using software to span multiple DVD's.
Just save the packaging, that the external came in, or build shipping boxes, with good foam inserts, that hold the drive.
Good luck,
Hunt

It should be about the same as DV. HDV uses MPEG compression to get the larger video to fit in the same "space".

John T Smith Sep 5, 2010 3:25 PM (in response to JSS1138)Oh Yeah... and since HDV is a transfer from tape, isn't that an "I-Frame Only" type of file for the best quality for the size?

5. Re: How much loss in capturing from tape?
JSS1138 Sep 6, 2010 1:28 PM (in response to John T Smith)HDV, unlike DV, is NOT I-frame only. It uses a GOP structure, wherein only two frames out of every thirty (twice per second) are encoded in their entirety. The other 28 frames per second are encoded as a reference to other frames.
