1. Re: Samsung spinpoint f3 vs Western Digital Black Caviar
Harm Millaard Sep 8, 2010 3:50 AM (in response to semajha)Both brands have a good reputation. WD is usually more expensive and less suited for use in raid configurations due to the WD TLER "feature".
With every new disk you have to pay special attention to rattling noises or strange drops in transfer rates, because that can indicate possible problems, but if they operate reliably for three months, you can be pretty sure you not have a Monday morning model.
The F3's are extremely fast and in large arrays achieve fantastic results. Personally I would prefer the F3's.

billbuch Sep 10, 2010 7:34 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Interesting that no one seems to be using Seagates. I've been using their SATAs (enterprise versions) in raid arrays since about 2003 and before that their SCSIs in striped arrays with never a failure that I recall. I'm currently running 6 1TB SATAs (ST31000340NS) out of a Ciprico (SATA I) card getting on average about 340 read and 320 write.
Have other folks had problems with Seagates?

Studio North Films Sep 11, 2010 7:34 AM (in response to billbuch)its possibly due to price & performance.
with 6x samsung 1tb F3 you get aprox 500 + mbs.

billbuch Sep 11, 2010 7:58 AM (in response to Studio North Films)Hmmm. I forgot to mention my array is a raid 5. Nevertheless, me thinks the next sys/raid card update
will also include F3s, provided they're rated as a 24/7 hdd.
