In Captivate 5 we don't have *avi option and you also cannot choose the video Formets. under output options.
You can create
1) Windows Executable (*.exe)
2) MAC Executable (*.app)
3) Flash Files (*f4v)
You can export it on Flash Files
the best option for you is to choose ( Windows Executable )
You could publish from Captivate as FLV or F4V, then use a conversion utility to convert to AVI if you want.

which conversion utility would you recommend?
I also have the problem, that my customer insists on using the Windows Media Player and I've Captivate 5 projects.
Thnaks a lot, Linda
Although I haven't tested this myself. I would suggest that you convert to AVI format using Adobe Media Encoder CS5 which ships with Adobe Captivate 5. Once you have added your F4V file you can then choose Microsoft AVI or Windows Media from the Format menu.
Maybe you don't have any other encoders installed on your computer?
You could try installing a codec pack like k-lite or combined community codec pack (look them up on Wikipedia).
Or if you can't be doing with all that, use an encoder that has everything bundeled together, such as Mediacoder or Super.
