I think I just found the answer. You have to Option double click on the nested comp

The option-double click has been around since nesting was introduced in, um, Ev2 I think. There had to be a way to differentiate between opening a layer and opening the sources of the layer. Are you just beginning to explore nesting and precomposing? A remarkable function of After Effects that many of us take for granted these days and, frankly, as we move our stuff into other applications like Final Cut or Motion, we deeply resent the absence of--or at least Adobe's clean implementation of--the nesting function.
