    An error occured while trying to read data

      Hi RoboHelpers,

       

      While opening my main project today (large project w/ thousands of topics) my project froze twice and wasn't responding, so I forced it to close via Task Manager and deleted the CPD file, thinking it was the culprit.

       

      I then got this error when I tried to reopen the .XJP file:

       

      "An error occurred while trying to read data from

      <D:\Hg\PcdmisQA\Pcdlrn\CoreHelp\13_hardware_topics\13_hardware_topics.fpj><1>."

       

      I clicked OK to get past this error, and now my htms are not appearing inside the Topic List for 13_hardware_topics and the TOC links show that the topics don't exist. But the .htms do exist inside the actual directory in Windows.

       

      I think I can fix this by importing the .htms inside 13_hardware_topics, but I'm not sure why it happened in the first place. Is there a way to just fix the .fjp file instead--if this is indeed the problem?

          I don't know if this is at the root cause of the error but I see that the closing </name> tag has a number of instances where there is a spurious space inside it:

            Hi Colum,

             

            Thanks for looking at it. Sadly, I don't think that's it. I just double-checked the .fpj inside Notepad++ and there aren't any spaces where you show them to be. I'm not sure why it appears that way on the post. Maybe it's just some formatting issue while posting to this forum. On a side not, is there a <code></code> tags we could wrap around pasted text like this so no formatting takes place. I've seen this in other forums and have found it useful.

             

            I also forgot to post I'm using RH7 (latest RH7 version) and Windows Vista SP2.

              What a bummer. Shame. Not sure about whether a <code> </code> tag exists. I've used it in other forums too and it works really well. Hope someone else finds the cause of the error for you.

                Thanks Colum. Me too.

                 

                I decided I would try and reimport the .htm files. They imported fine but oddly enough they still don't show up in the topic list. So, I loaded in an old backed up copy of my .fpj from a month ago and now the help when I load the xpj says "Not Responding" again. Not sure what to do to resolve this. I'd love to hear any recommendations.

                  I just needed to wait. It was "Not Responding" for some time and then eventually went through. So, using a backed up .fpj file seems to have solved the problem.... for now at least. We'll see if anything else crops up.

                    Hi Jared,

                     

                    If it happens again, you could use a comparison tool like BeyondCompare to see what the differences between your backed up file and current file are. This might help pinpoint the problem.

                     

                    Also, just checking that D: is not a network drive? (It's not usually, but doesn't hurt to confirm.)

                    P.S. I also notice a number of places where <name> appears multiple times within <topic>. I don't use RH8, but I'm not sure this is correct. I imagine it could cause problems. Perhaps another RH8 user could confirm if they see the same thing.
