1. Re: Why does dynamic link force Encore CS5 to transcodde?
Stan Jones Sep 8, 2010 9:15 PM (in response to zorrocbr)(but it can do this with other programs that edit the same AVCHD footage) but what about the other formats forcing transcodes?
Just thinking out loud....
How do the other programs do this? They don't dynamic link, so, with them, you have a file to import/import as timeline. If you edit the original file, the other programs must do something to create a new file.I wonder if your issue is not so much EN not letting you set "don't transcode" (when there is no file yet for it to have as a transcoded option), but with PR reencoding assets that you (and others) would like to see processed more minimally. I don't know for a fact that that is not the case, but it became an issue when mpeg assets were being edited without a "smart rendering" engine.

2. Re: Why does dynamic link force Encore CS5 to transcodde?
zorrocbr Sep 8, 2010 9:59 PM (in response to Stan Jones)It doesn't really matter which program I use. I can use Womble to edit regular def video and save it, I
can use Video Studio Pro to edit AVCHD and save it. Neither transcodes except around the edited points. Once the file is saved, I can then import it into Encore (as either an asset or a timeline) without Encore looking to transcode unless there is a problem with the original source material. If I take ANY file into Premiere Pro and then establish a dynamic link with Encore, encore will not allow me the "Don't Transcode" option. This is even if I have done nothing with the file in Premiere but to bring it into the program.

3. Re: Why does dynamic link force Encore CS5 to transcodde?
Jeff Bellune Sep 9, 2010 4:13 AM (in response to zorrocbr)Dynamic Link sends the sequence information to En from Pr. A Pr sequence is not a DVD-compliant MPEG2 file; in fact, it's not a file at all. Therefore, the video information from Pr must be transcoded into an actual MPEG2 DVD file. The purpose of DL is not to prevent transcoding, it's to allow the editor and author to make changes to the Pr sequence and have those changes immediately appear in En. Without DL, the editor would have to export an MPEG2 DVD file after each change, and then replace the existing MPEG2 DVD file in the En project with the updated file from Pr.

4. Re: Why does dynamic link force Encore CS5 to transcodde?
zorrocbr Sep 9, 2010 10:16 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)So is there any way to edit in Premiere Pro without Premiere Pro transcoding? If I can edit there, save the edited file, then import this into Encore this will work too. I just want to avoid transcoding my files if I don't need to. If Premiere can't currently do this any idea if it is in the works for the future?

No.

Not likely. "Smart Rendering" isn't the panacea that you think it is. There are several technical issues to overcome, and even those apps that can do it often have issues with the output at random times. Pr is trying to position itself as a truly "pro" application, and the inclusion of Smart Rendering would put that effort in at least some amount of jeopardy.

6. Re: Why does dynamic link force Encore CS5 to transcodde?
tjh65 Feb 18, 2011 3:20 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)I use Mainconcepts Codec Suite for smart rendering. This seems to work ok for HDV files.
