RandomReado Sep 9, 2010 2:21 PM (in response to rtalton)How will that work? Can we make an app in Flex and run it through some sort of packaging tool into an iPhone app?

JoshBeall Sep 9, 2010 2:22 PM (in response to rtalton)Well who woulda thunk. I didn't think Apple would ever admit they made a mistake!

3. Re: Apple is backing down
JoshBeall Sep 9, 2010 2:24 PM (in response to RandomReado)If I'm reading the article correctly, this opens up developers to use Adobe's tools to package up Flash apps into iPhone apps and sell them on Apple's official app store. I do not see how it would open up the use of in-browser Flash, despite the author's implication that it might.

4. Re: Apple is backing down
rtalton Sep 9, 2010 2:25 PM (in response to RandomReado)Adobe had an iPhone packager in Flash CS5, and were working on "Slider" for Flex. Wait and see what happens next.

5. Re: Apple is backing down
pauland Sep 9, 2010 2:26 PM (in response to JoshBeall)Apple just changed their position. I don't see that as any admission of a mistake. There still isn't flash on the iWhatsit and Apple still has control of the whole sales and approval process.
-
6. Re: Apple is backing down
rtalton Sep 9, 2010 2:27 PM (in response to JoshBeall)Flash is still NOT allowed on the iPhone. But now Adobe is free to come up with tools to create iPhone apps, like they are currently working on for Android (Flex 4.5, or "Hero").

7. Re: Apple is backing down
rtalton Sep 9, 2010 2:31 PM (in response to pauland)If banning Apple's banning of Flash-based development tools to create iPhone apps wasn't a mistake, neither was the Newton.
In related news, the FTC and EU are chuckling.

8. Re: Apple is backing down
JoshBeall Sep 9, 2010 2:34 PM (in response to pauland)Ah, good point! It's "changing their position" not admitting they made a mistake. Apple, of course, never makes mistakes. How silly of me ;-)

10. Re: Apple is backing down
JeffryHouser Sep 9, 2010 2:45 PM (in response to rtalton)Slider had nothing to do with the iPhone specifically. It just just going to be a Flex Framework optimized for Mobile.
Slider was terminated and said "ideas" are being rolled into Flex 4.5 / Hero. [Once again, that has nothing to do with Apple].

11. Re: Apple is backing down
rtalton Sep 9, 2010 2:49 PM (in response to JeffryHouser)Wellllll..... ok.
Hey Jeffry,
Do you know if the iPhone packager app for Flash project will be resurrected, or was it ever released in CS5? If so,how difficult would it be to use in Flex?
-
12. Re: Apple is backing down
JeffryHouser Sep 9, 2010 2:53 PM (in response to RandomReado)Yes, that is the theory. The iphone exporter tool is already in Flash CS5. The tool was not converted to Flash.
-
13. Re: Apple is backing down
rtalton Sep 9, 2010 2:55 PM (in response to JeffryHouser)Gotta be a way to use that API in Flex...hmmmm...
Looks like I may have to upgrade to CS5, finally.
-
14. Re: Apple is backing down
JeffryHouser Sep 9, 2010 2:56 PM (in response to rtalton)iPhone exporter was released in Flash CS5. It was never converted to other Adobe tools [so far as I know].
Will it be ressurected? I haven't the foggiest idea. [I'm not an Adobe Employee].
If it were my company, I would not spend any more time on the development of it without some formal guarantee from Apple that it would be allowed. Adobe implemented it when it was okay w/ the licensing; then Apple changed the licensing. Whose to say they won't change again in another six months?

rtalton Sep 9, 2010 2:57 PM (in response to JeffryHouser)Heard any good intel on a Hero release date or window? I promise not to quote you.

16. Re: Apple is backing down
JeffryHouser Sep 9, 2010 3:15 PM (in response to rtalton)I should have said "iPhone Exporter was not converted to Flex". My typo.
It has been publicly stated that Hero will be Flex 4.5 and will be released in "2011". I expect it 1st quarter. But, for a point release that seems like a long time.

Devtron Sep 9, 2010 3:19 PM (in response to rtalton)it's not just Flash that is being allowed onto the iPhone development platform, its everything.
Google Ads has a greenlight too. iPhone spam anyone?

18. Re: Apple is backing down
rtalton Sep 9, 2010 3:21 PM (in response to JeffryHouser)I've been using the Android Dev Tools in Eclipse 3.6
Am really hoping to drop it come 2011. It is *ahem* challenging to use, compared to Flex.
If they can add in "export to iPhone", perfect!

matthew horn Sep 14, 2010 6:53 AM (in response to rtalton)According to the Adobe Labs site, "the feature is available for developers to use today and we will now resume development work on this feature for future releases."

Gregory Lafrance Sep 14, 2010 7:37 AM (in response to matthew horn)iPhone is rapidly losing market share to Android phone.
Great Flash content will be available to Android users but not iPhone users.
Eventually Flash will be on iPhone (and iPad). Steve won't admit making a mistake, but that's okay.
Good news for everyone.

Do you have any references to statistics supporting that claim? I've been wondering if Android has truly been supplanting iPhone OS devices... I'd like to think it is!

22. Re: Apple is backing down
rtalton Sep 14, 2010 8:16 AM (in response to JoshBeall)Android has already surpassed iPhone's market share.
Gartner predicts that by 2014 it will be #2 only to Symbian.

23. Re: Apple is backing down
Gregory Lafrance Sep 14, 2010 8:55 AM (in response to rtalton)That's right. Android's rapid surge above iPhone has been prominant in the news lately.
That's why I'm so excited!

24. Re: Apple is backing down
Devtron Sep 14, 2010 9:16 AM (in response to Gregory Lafrance)Sure, these numbers for Android are impressive, but the key point here is that the iPhonehttp://www.ismashphone.com/2010/08/iphone-vs-android-market-share-its-complicated.html# still mastered 21% market share on one carrier only. (AT&T)

25. Re: Apple is backing down
rtalton Sep 14, 2010 9:42 AM (in response to Devtron)Wellll...... the article you cite on a iPhone-centric web site draws a different conclusion, but their writing is biased towards the iPhone, which it should be, since it declares itself a iPhone fan site.
Their article is based on Q1 numbers. They include a small update in paragraph 5 re: Q2 results, but still do not change ultimate their conclusion, which is that "..market share is all over the place..." hmmmm. Strange conclusion to make when the sales numbers show a clear picture to market analysts who do this for a living.
Kudos to Apple for inventing this dynamic market, certainly! They showed how successful and profitable smartphones could be, when combined with a touch interface, great OS and a thriving app market. But now there are other players in the market, and even if the iPhone ends up being sold by other carriers, the competitive floodgates have been opened by Android devices. Hence, I would put more faith in Gartner's sales numbers and projections. Apple no longer has the virtual monopoly it enjoyed.
I think Flex devs will be looking forward to developing on both Android AND iPhone platforms, now that Apple has backed down from their restrictive policy. I know I am. But I agree with Gartner that Android will become the dominant force in the marketplace. Adobe is very wise to concentrate on "Hero". My guess is that they will also come up with similar technology for iPhone development in Flash Builder, and we'll all be thrilled when they do.

26. Re: Apple is backing down
Devtron Sep 14, 2010 9:50 AM (in response to rtalton)I disagree, I do not think the article is biased towards iPhone at all.I think it gives a good comparison on market share and the different variables and factors in the equation (most of which are completely ignored in biased threads, such as this on Adobe's forum).
My point was to remind people that iPhone is only sold in the USA through AT&T. I just bought an iPhone 4 and even AT&T cant get their hands on the devices, I had to go to the Apple store to obtain mine. Even then, the Apple store was low in stocked iPhones, they only had the 32 GB devices in stock.
Also, it is fair to point out, nobody in this thread is even talking about or quoting real numbers until now. The iPhone set the standard and Android is following closely. I own both devices, and develop on both devices, and would much rather have my iPhone. even without Flash or Adobe in the mix. Just my two cents, from someone that owns and develops on both platforms.
