P Spier Sep 11, 2010 2:05 PM (in response to schaller2003)Export to .inx or .idml, depending on your version, open that and save as a new .indd.

5. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:01 AM (in response to schaller2003)Okay,
I've figured out the overset text problem but ID still crashes if I export to pdf. I had three notes in my file that were showing up as overset text. I've got other notes throughout the document that aren't showing up that way. Wierd, but deleting the note got rid of the OV linked .psd file that wasn't really even there at all.
But ID is still crashing. Any thoughts?

schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:06 AM (in response to schaller2003)Update:
I tried removing all links from my entire document. No help.

7. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
P Spier Sep 12, 2010 6:08 AM (in response to schaller2003)You said you'd isolated a page. Is that really still true? Could be a bad image on the page, or a bad font if ID is really crashing and not just hanging on the background export.
Do you get an error message? Does ID close or hang? Can you export the file in pieces? How about immediately after a reboot?

8. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:17 AM (in response to schaller2003)Update:
Export page one only: works
Export Page 1-2: works
Export page 1-10: crashes
Export 1-3: works
Export 1-4:works
Export 1-5:works
Export 1-6:works
Export 1-7:works
Export 1-8:crash
Export page 8 by itself: crash (note page 8 is the first time one of my linked files starts showing up)
Export page 8 by itself with all links removed (i.e text only): crash
Export page 9 by itself: crash

9. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:19 AM (in response to P Spier)ID starts the export because I see the "background" indicator but then immediately after that it just vanishes. No error or anything. I haven't messed with fonts or trying it immediately after reboot. I'll try that then I'll try changing the font.

11. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
P Spier Sep 12, 2010 6:27 AM (in response to schaller2003)Can you export what's on page 8 if you copy everything on the page and past it into a new file?

12. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:30 AM (in response to schaller2003)I changed all the fonts to Helvetica regular (so that it was the only thing showing in the "find font" dialog. And it does the same thing. Exports 1-7 fine, but then starts crashing at page 8.

13. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:34 AM (in response to P Spier)Nope, I copied and pasted it to a brand new file and it crashed on export.

14. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:39 AM (in response to schaller2003)If I move my text frame off of page 8 it exports. So there is something in the text frame on page 8 that's doing it. I've got text, 2 inline anchored objects and thats it. (I just tried deleting the inline anchored objects and it still crashed)

15. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:44 AM (in response to schaller2003)okay, if I delete each instance of my "headers" it exports. (each header is tied to a "header" paragraph style.)
-
16. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:45 AM (in response to schaller2003)page 8 is also the first time those headers are used.
-
17. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:47 AM (in response to schaller2003)that "header" paragraph style uses a bulleted list. I turned off the bullet list and it exports fine. I wonder if its the bullet I used.

18. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 6:53 AM (in response to schaller2003)Problem identified:
I used the font Webdings to get a little downward arrow to use as a bullet point on my headers. Once I switched all instances of that bullet. It exports the whole document. (webdings doesn't show up in the "find font" dialog, must be because its used only in the bullets dialog.)
-
19. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
P Spier Sep 12, 2010 6:54 AM (in response to schaller2003)Is it really a list, or do you just need a bullet? You don't have to use a list to include a bullet.
If you change the bullet are you successful? Is the header text in a frame or on a path?

20. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 7:04 AM (in response to schaller2003)Problem Solved:
I switched all instances of the webdings bullet over to another and it is now exporting the whole book.
Thanks for your help. It was truely a help.

21. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
[Jongware] Sep 12, 2010 7:08 AM (in response to schaller2003)Just for testing purposes, if you create a new file using your original method, does it also not work? If not, can you post the file somewhere where others can download it and do further testing on?
It would seem some unlikely bug crept in somewhere, but before we start screaming to Adobe we'd better make sure

22. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
schaller2003 Sep 12, 2010 7:30 AM (in response to [Jongware])It's weird, after I got this to work I noticed back on page 2. I forgot to change some of those bullets and it still exports fine. Not sure what's going on there.

dcald Oct 10, 2012 10:02 PM (in response to schaller2003)I am not sure if you will even see this since it has been so long since this thread was active but a client of mine is having the exact same experience. We thought it was a one time thing when producing a college schedule but it has now happened again with the next one. We are working in an ID/InCopy workflow. Everyone is working in version 5.5 with editors on PCs and designers on Macs. We have never had this problem with previous version over the last few years. The links panel indicates that the images are in overset text but we know for a fact that they are from a previous issue and are no longer in the ID file. Also, preflight indicates that there is no overset text in the file. It is one flow thoughout the entire file. Attempts to create PDF fail consistently. Each time someone has had to build the file again from scratch which for a file over 60 pages long, is not good for feelings towards the ID/InCopy. Were you ever able to get an answer as to the cause of this problem?
We have tried saving as idml and reopening, trying to jump to the links and attempting in multiple ways to delete whatever it is that thinks it is in overset text and an assortment of other things that have not done anything to help.
If you have any information beyond this thread, I would love to hear it.
Thanks

25. Re: False Overset Text in Links Panel
P Spier Oct 11, 2012 4:38 AM (in response to dcald)I would suggest running through the same steps as above (which it sounds like you've done) to see if you can isolate a problem, and in addition you might want to try exporting the stories to InDesign Tagged Text, then create a new file, move over the master pages, and place all the exported stories.
Also, be sure everyone is updated to the 7.5.3 patch.

This implies to me that you "recycle" document instead of building a template. ID is pretty stable, but no layout program is perfect and each time you do a save you introduce the possibility of small errors in the file. Somnetimes those small errors become big problems.
You can reduce the risk of problems on recurring publications by creating a template that contains your master pages, color swatches, styles, and any "static" content that might not be on a master page but still does not change from version to version. Each new version should be made from the template, so it is always a fresh second-generation copy.
