The only thing I can think of is that Windows LIVE/Movie Maker is runnin
g like messenger and Office LIVE and that would be disturbing for
PE8... You can enter the pro
ccesses with ctrl-alt-del and kill the Movie Maker proccess manually (in the handler) in that case and you would not need to uninstall it but repeat killing the proccess every time for PE8.
Otherwise uninstalling LIVE Movie Maker should be fixing it if I take a guess, and I wonder doesn't you have Windows Movie Maker in the computer from start, why would you need/want Windows LIVE Movie Maker (at least my Vista has Movie Maker preinstalled)?
Windows 7 isn't pre-installed with any version of Movie Maker. And if you follow the W7 route to install WMM it will install the 'Live' version. I recommend that you uninstall this version and install v2.6 from Microsoft: Download details: Windows Movie Maker 2.6
Despite it's 'Vista' credentials it runs on XP and W7 as well. Unlike 'Live' it can export to DV-AVI Type 2 - absolutely perfect for PRE SD projects.

I think that you have gotten some good advice above, and only offer this ARTICLE on setting up your computer for an editing session, as there could well be many other things that load on boot-up. For Win7, be sure to look down-thread for Black Viper's Win7 tune-up tips.
Thanks for the suggestions. None worked. I removed all the Windows Live/Movie Maker software. Then I removed and reloaded PE 8. Still crashes when I open either a new project or existing. In fact I removed anything that was loaded in the last 10 days since I first installed PE 8. Can't figure out why it worked fine on the first project and a few days later it won't. Might have to go to the 800 number I guess.
