1. Re: Healing brush tool behaving strangely in Elements 8
BobGager Sep 12, 2010 8:10 PM (in response to Glenans)The Healing Brush isn't always the best tool. In some cases, when it heals, you get the smudging.
Try the Clone Stamp Tool in those instances.

Terri_F Sep 13, 2010 12:09 AM (in response to Glenans)It smeared because you run it along an edge with a strong contrast or across an area of strong contrast.
If you want to heal beside an area of strong contrast, use a selection to separate the area you are healing from the area with the strong contrast. As long as you don't get any of the high contrast pixels within the selection, you shouldn't get the smear. If it smears with the selection in place, move your selection over a few pixels and try again. -

99jon Sep 13, 2010 2:06 AM (in response to Glenans)I find the spot healing brush works best with a smallish brush+ soft edge. Make sure you have proximity selected on the top menu and you will automatically sample the closest pixels.

Glenans Sep 13, 2010 4:31 AM (in response to Terri_F)It smears when you're doing nothing but sky - nothing to do with contrast edges etc.. but thanks for the input.

The Gannet Nov 12, 2012 2:42 PM (in response to Glenans)I had exactly the same problem, came here to find out but it doesn't look like you got an answer.
Resetting tool doesn't work, resetting all tools does nothing. After alot of fiddling around after finding no answers I got a solution. I must have been using the tool with the "replace" setting, and somehow it got reset to "normal" which is what does the smearing.
So try this:
open the healing tool and select replace from the settings "mode" dropdown
