    Resizable Toolbar

    penpicker Level 1

It would be so great if Adobe would make the Toolbar resizable!  And possibly even add a little color to the icons to make them easier to identify.  But especially the ability to resize -- for those of us who are older the toolbar is just too small.

(That being said -- thank you, Adobe, for the best software program ever!)

I’ve been giving it some thought and you might be able to create a Tools Panel with bigger buttons yourself with Configurator (version 1 for CS4, version 2 for CS5).

Now scaling the buttons unfortunately does not resize the icons, but it might be possible to underlay them with upsized images; and fly-outs for secondary Tools are not an option, as far as I can tell, but they would have to be placed as buttons of their own.

Not the most straightforward setup, but possibly a work-around.

I agree. I think for people with eyesight problems, or even very high res monitors - having re-scalable toolbar would be a great option.

Do you think Adobe actually reads these posts in the Feature Request thread?

Yes at least a few of them do.

They do. And their reps reply often.

Actually, I think the issue is a big bigger than that. I want to table two related issues. First, Adobe need to make all of their interfaces resizable. You cannot even remotely read anything in any of their products if you use a high resolution screen - I work with a 2600 x 1700 32" screen and, if I try to use that properly, icons become dots and menu items devolve into ant tracks. Flash is utterly unusable at these resolutions - due to its already fly-**** sized mini-icons - and you cannot read Help in Dreamweaver even at 1200 x 800, let alone anything higher.

This may be an issue for the specialist user. Nevertheless, there must be a lot of people who work with maps, with large images at print resolution and so on, and they are people who will want a better interface for their graphics than is suitable for a web designer, who innately works at low resolution. It is not difficult to implement such a fix, and a lot more useful than the silly toys that Adobe keep loading into Photoshop.

The second interface issue is directly related to this: it is the capacity to customise the tool bars. Of course, Configurator allows you to make a menu similar to the toolbar, but one that lacks certain crucial things. The absence of the colour switcher means that  you have to go to pallette every single damn time you want a colour change. It is also not really very stable (although I should say that I tried and earlier release with CS4.)

What is needed is something that M/Soft put in Office ten years ago, which is the ability to modify all toolbars to be the way you want them. (Alas, idiotic MS removed this in favour of the hateful ribbon, but that's another issue.) The current tool bar contains things - such as the history brush - which I personally never use. Others get used, at most, once a month. It is silly that they are occupying real estate that could be better used for other things. If people want to keep them, well fine for them. You can assign keystrokes as you like, so if you are a keyboard rather than an icon select person, you can also set up key stokes as you want them, or leave them alone. I cannot see how this would impact on current working practice, and can see how it would enable much better interfaces to be built. If the icons were also resizable, then that would solve two problems in one.

The absence of the colour switcher

Have you asked about that in the Configurator Forum?

Because I suspect that it or a feature simulating it might be achievable in a Panel – but like I said, that’s a »suspicion«, my Configurator-use is not that advanced.

As a couple of Adobe-employees drop by here occasionally I try to avoid making statements about what effort programming certain features would take … but maybe you are a programmer with some insight into the matter.

I had not been aware that there was one - I will look. I did however download the version 2 of the configurator, which is certainly prettier but which does not seem to have this facility. It does, however, allow you to resize icons, but not dynamically depending on current screen resolution. So if you wan to go down from 2000 pixel width you end up with icons the size of bricks.

Well, when some customer tells me I »just« need to do this or that with the implication of how easy that is (even though their understanding of the matter may be tenuous or worse) I get a bit irritated, so I would not want to do that to someone else.
