    Editing a site

      OK, please don't blast me if this is a stupid question because I'm new to Dreamweaver and trying to learn on the fly.

      I'm trying to edit an existing site in Dreamweaver 8. I copy the root site to my hard drive from the host server (which is a UNIX Server) and go thru the steps to define a New Site, specifying the local root folder, default images folder, etc.

      However, when I open a page, none of the links to images or jscript work, and I get tons of highlighted invalid code.

      Any idea what I'm doing wrong when I set this up? I appreciate any help.

      Also, any recommendations on good Dreamweaver books?

          Did you remember to get the images when you downloaded the site from the server?

            Yep, I copied the main folder that includes subfolders for images, javascript, etc. I can re-link an image in the properties and it will show up, but that doesn't seem right to have to do that for everything.

              Show us a page where nothing works. Then show us a page where you have
              relinked things so that they appear.

                What are the paths showing up as? Post an example of what you are talking about.

                  Here's a bit of source code for an image that shows up fine live, but not in Dreamweaver:

                  <tr>
                  <td colspan="2" class="contentArea"><!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="image" --><img src="../images/background_images/home_page_image.jpg" width="749" height="190"><!-- InstanceEndEditable --></td>
                  </tr>

                  The name of the local root folder on my hard drive that I specify is webroot, with subfolders called css, images, javascript, and templates. Under images is a folder called background_images.

                  I also have the default images folder specified as webroot. For the image source in properties, it's looking just in webroot, and not webroot/images/background_images like the code above. I've also tried to specify the images folder as the default images folder, and I get the same thing.

                  The same thing is happening with my templates, CSS and javascript folders.

                    If this is a new site you just imported into DW, try rebuilding the cache for the site to make sure it is reading everything right.
