DW CS5 saving as html vs htm

    TCarp Community Member

I'm a beginning user and just converted from CS2 to CS5.  In DW2 new files were saved with .htm but in DW5 they are html.  I think I see where the default is set but before I start changing things can someone explain 1) why DW5 is saving differently and 2) which extension I should use from now on?

      Thanks

Six in one...At this point anything incapable of reading extensions greater than three characters isn't worth worrying about.

As for what you should use from now on...Anything that will allow for some level of includes such as SHTML or if you're feeling a bit daring and really want to allow yourself some expansion in the future, PHP might be a good idea.

Note: if you go that route, you'll want to look into installing a local server such as WAMP or MAMP.

I was also having trouble with this. Thanks for the info.

The suffix setting is in edit > preferences > new documents.

My issue is I have all these .htm files (and coding in pages and templates that reference them).  What I don't know is whether DW5 just changed the default or if I set the suffix to .htm in DW2.  I vaguely recall an issue with Mac files (I briefly used a Mac for my web pages).

Does anyone know what the out-of-the-box default was in DW2?

                Thanks Bob

I'm pretty much a beginner so my skills are pretty basic.  I'll do research on SHTML and PMP, however, my web sites are relative simple.

From your note I assume it won't make any difference whether I use htm or html.

Let's just back up for one second. There was no such thing as Dreamweaver CS2. CS3 was the first Adobe release.

Prior to that you had Macromedia Dreamweaver 8.

Sorry, but I started at CS3 so I'm not sure about the defaults.

Good catch!  You are absolutely correct.

I went from MM DW8 to CS5.  I got both the CS2 and Studio 8 products at the same time.

To get to the original point, it makes no difference whether you use .htm or .html, so long as the links are to the correct one. It's nice - in a way - to be consistent, but no need to be.

With respect to .shtml, .php, and all the rest - you will know when you need to worry about them, and that is when you start to use them. You won't be encountering them at the beginner stage. Until then, don't worry about them.

Can't remember back to MM/DW8 (or even MM/DW4!) but I think there always was the option. Back in the bad old days with the Windows/DOS restriction of 8+3 for filenames.
