I currently have Adobe Reader 9.3.4 installed and it has worked fine until about three days ago; no changes to the system or program were made recently.
Here's what happens:
When I try to open Reader (a PDF document, a document in a web browser, or the application itself) I get the following message:
The application or DLL C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
When I try to uninstall Adobe Reader in order to do a fresh install I get the following:
Preparing to remove...
Fatal Error: Acrobat failed to load its core DLL.
misiexec.exe: msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Finally, when trying to reinstall the latest version of Reader the downloader and installer claim "success," yet I get the same DLL error messages and the program fails to launch.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there an easy fix, or am I probably full of malware?
From Add/Remove Programs, try to run 'Repair'.
If that fails, remove Adobe Reader using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (from http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html), then reinstall from scratch.
