1. Re: Creating a curving and moving filmstrip with videos playing in the strip
Taverino Sep 18, 2010 2:40 PM (in response to Rowby Goren)If you are running on a Mac, there is a very nice stand-alone application - Kinemac, that does this.
http://www.kinemac.com/tutorials/index.html
I would never have paid the $299 that it lists for, but it came in one of the MacHeist-type bundles where you pay $50 for a dozen apps. It is easy in Kinemac to do the kind of thing you describe (see Tutorial 1). Kinemac is one of the Mac applications I miss most after switching back to Windows.

I just looked at

And I can see why you would love that program!
Maybe they will come up with a PC version someday (SOON!)

4. Re: Creating a curving and moving filmstrip with videos playing in the strip
Rick Gerard Sep 19, 2010 8:03 AM (in response to Rowby Goren)There's bunch of tutorials for After Effects and FreeForm that popup with a google search. Any one of them will point you in the right direction. FreeForm now comes with CS5.
Basically you create a long thin comp that looks like a filmstrip. Usually you'd use one layer with holes (transparent areas) for the films sprocket holes and frames. Below that layer you'd place images that go in the frames. All you have to do is replace the stills with videos or multiple copies of your video.
That long and thin composition is then brought into a standard sized comp and DE ForgeFreeform is added as an effect. The FilmStrip comp is distorted and you add a camera move.
This should get you started. I hope it helps. If I get a moment I'll send you a sample project.

Todd_Kopriva Sep 19, 2010 10:19 AM (in response to Rick Gerard)Rick's suggestion to use FreeForm is the same suggestion that I would give.
Here's a page that collects some more information about FreeForm.

Thanks for that tip. Yes, a sample project would help me get a kickstart, if you have one avail.

7. Re: Creating a curving and moving filmstrip with videos playing in the strip
Rick Gerard Sep 19, 2010 2:58 PM (in response to rowby)Here's a sample project. It should be fairly easy to figure out. I created a pre-comp for a sprocket hole and then dropped that in a comp for a frame. I used Motion Tile to expand both the sprocket hole and the Frame to fill a filmstrip. To that comp I added another comp that represents the movie. I then dropped that comp into another comp so that I could use Offset to move the filmstrip inside the container. That comp was brought into a main comp and Free Form applied.

rowby Sep 19, 2010 6:09 PM (in response to Rick Gerard)Thanks!
It looks great.
I am going through the file seeing how you did it.
I assume I can replace the still graphics with a different video in each "frame".
Stay tuned!

rowby Sep 21, 2010 5:53 AM (in response to Rick Gerard)Hi Rick,
I finally had time to work on the filmstripo.
The filmstrip looks great with the video.
Is there a way (or can you tell me the steps,m perhaps to a tutorial?) where I can put a different video into each frrame. Right now the same video appears all of the frames.
Thanks
Rowby
