This has been my experience, as well. I will instead Place the AI file into a New Image (set up to match my Project's Frame Size) in PS, and then Save_As PSD, allowing PS to Rasterize the image. I find the result much better. Though PrPro will Import AI, the Rasterization has been the weak part for me, and PS does a better job.
Thanks. I will give that a try tonight. It looks like it might also work to export from Illustrator as a Tiff which would support an Alpha channel. Perhaps, CS6 will do better.
Over time, PrPro has borrowed from some PS algorithms. Though I have not yet been able to test the Scaling algorithms in PrPro, they are said to be improved. Maybe others will make their way into PrPro later.
Because I spend more time in PS, and am usually working with elements from AI, I have to admit that I have not gone directly from AI, with say the TIFF option w/ Alpha, but that should work fine too. My PS suggestion is based on my normal workflow, so you might well be able to save a step and the use of another program.
Good luck, and please report your success. I'll certainly be glad to amend my suggestion, if the direct Save_As from AI does the job as well. Thanks.
Have you tried enlarging in AI, and then bringing into PR?
