    scottashackleton

      Hey

So I just downloaded the trial version of Premiere Elements 9 and during the end of installiation I am getting the following error:

"The installation process has encountered an error while installing MSXML"

I uninstalled and tried again only to get the same error...

Has anyone seen this before?? I am on Windows XP SP2

      Thanks, Scott

          Scott,

Unfortunately, you have posted to the PrPro CS5 forum. You want the Pr Elements Forum.

Maybe the tireless MOD's can move this post for you.

          Good luck,

For general installation of Adobe programs, this CHECKLIST might be useful. You have probably already done most things, but read over it, to see if you missed something.

            Good luck,

I'm having the same problem when installing PrE 9.  I have disabled my anti-virus as much as possible.  I am running as administrator or XP SP2.  PrE was about ready to be fully installed when the error occurred.  I can reproduce this by manually installing MSXML (from Adobe Premiere Elements 9\PRE 9\msxml\msxml6.msi).  A dialog appears stating a group policy prevents installation (I can install just about every other application without issue).  Note, the control panel shows MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB36181), MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954459), MSXML 6 Service Pack 2 (KB954459) as already being installed.

This is the important parts of %TEMP%/MSXML.log:

Is there a reason you haven't updated XP to SP3?

The corporate IT Gods won't allow such an action as to be on the latest service pack

I did notice the readme states PrE 9 should work with XP SP2

I'm sorry, but SP2 is not an up to date operating system and may not include important updates (particularly for your graphics card) that could resolve this issue.

Maybe someone else knows of a workaround. Sorry.

I provided burnt offerings to the IT Gods and they have provided me with XP SP3.  All Windows Updates have been applied.

The installation still fails at the same spot.  This is when MSXML is being installed -- part of the Shared Technologies category.  The installation is then completely rolled back.

The entry in %TEMP%/MSXML.log states "This installatin is forbidded by system policy.  Contact your system administrator".  I  have full administrator rights.

Help... I would really like to try this software out!

... and the rollback really messes the system up.  During the rollback I get a Windows Installer pop-up stating "Preparing to install..."  then it goes away.  MS Office applications ask me to re-register when I use them the next time.  And, I have to put the installation disk back in for "Document Viewer" (an HP application).

                            Gaurav,

Thanks for your recommendation.  The accout I was working with is part of the administrators group.  I also tried to install the MSXML file while running in Safe mode. The operation was still prohibited.

Please see the additional information in this thread http://forums.adobe.com/thread/735449?tstart=0.  I also filed a bug report.

                              Hi,

Have you tried workaround suggested at following link:

                              http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/33664744/sqlserver-2005-tools-msxml-6-install-f ails-on-clean-xp-pro-sp3.aspx

I believe you are also unable to uninstall MSXML from your machine. Have you tried out Windows Installer Cleanup utility in order to remove that.

                              Thanks,

The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility is no longer provided by Microsoft.  See

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.  The utility was corrupting system settings and so they removed it.

Yes, I cannot remove MSXML from the system.  That is the whole idea of the protected install for this particular security patch.

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=968749 for Microsoft's offical report on this issue.  Notice that the solution to fix the issue is 'no longer available'.

There have been some registry hacks I have tried which have not worked.  I reverted my system back to a backup before PrE was installed or the registry hacks were applied as the hacks are not from a known good source.

Really, PrE should not be attempting stomp over the later release (service pack) of MSXML.  PrE is attempting to install "MSXML 6.0 Parser and SDK".  The system already has MSXML 6.0 SP2 installed which was done by first installing MSXML 6.0 and then applying the security update from Microsoft.  You cannot have both service packs installed on the same system.

Is there any way to prevent the PrE installer from attempting to install the earlier version of MSXML?

                                  Simplest tricks are most beautiful:

After the installation files has been extracted to hard drive (before the actual installation begins) just go the folder ..\pre 9\msxml. Replace the msxml.msi file with another useful or harmless installation file (rename it to msxml.msi). Adobe's installation doesn't check if msxml.msi is a "real one", it just runs any msxml.msi and is happy.

                                  Timo

I was wondering about that but didn't dare try it because I didn't want to go through another rollback and OS restore.  Thanks for posting this simple workaround!

I finally got around the msxml installation here.  I took your advice but had to do one other item...

The PrE 8 setup files were located on a network drive.  I replace the msxml6.msi files with another msi package which I knew would install.  So I would take abc.msi and rename this to msxml6.msi.

The installation failed.  A dialog was popped up saying there was a network error reading abc.msi.  So I rolled back -- which of course corrupted my system.  I recovered from my backup.  I modifed the setup and tried again. This is what I needed to do to the PrE 9 setup...

                                        del msxml\*.*

                                        copy <path>\abc.msi msxml\msxml6.msi

                                        copy <path>\abc.msi msxml\msxml6_x64.msi

                                        copy <path>\abc.msi msxml\abc.msi

I like what I see but I'm not sure it justifies the cost as there aren't that many new features.  I'm happy with the performance with PrE.  I'm currently looking at any avantages I might see with PsE 9 and the updated Organizer.

If you received The installation process has encountered an error while installing MSXML during  installation of Premiere Elements 9 and the installation rolls back., please try to install the MSXML 6.0 package alone from the MSXML folder within the  Premiere Elements Disk / Extracted items list, you should most probably receive Windows Installer error “The system Administrator has  set policies to prevent the installation”
                                          Solution  1.
                                          1.     Uninstall  all versions of MSXML Parser from Add / Remove Programs and try to install MSXML  6.0 parser from the MSXML folder. If the installation is successful, proceed to  install Premiere Elements 9.0

                                          Solution 2.

                                          Solution  3.
                                          3.     Check  if Disable browse dialog box for new source or DisableMSI DWORD system policy is turned on. If it is turned on,  please turn it off. To check this, follow the below steps:

                                          c.     Close  the registry and try installing the MSXML package
                                          Solution 4.
                                          4.        Open  registry and browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\
                                          a.        Browse  through the list of strings to find MSXML entries and delete them. One such  entry is 745017A5E85BB88428D8ACA9520A35C3
                                          b.       Once  the complete list below products is checked and no more entries are present for  MSXML, try installing the MSXML package from the installation  folder.
