Auto Contrast, Auto Color Darkens Photo

    Chrsitian Community Member

I am running PS CS4 and a while ago 'auto tone, contrast and color' all simply darken the images with which I am working.  I realize that there are better ways to do this, but at times when doing 'snapshots' it is/was convenient to go this route.

This topic has been previously addressed, however, I did not understnd the answer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

Just a wild guess, but if you're perceiving that the Auto functions are overly darkening your photos then your monitor could be set so that it is displaying things too darkly.

Which of these two images looks to be at the more proper brightness to you?

Using those 3 options is the same as if you were to choose levels, and then click on the options button.

Auto Contrast = Enhance Monochromatic Checked

Auto Level = Enhance Per Channel contrast Checked

Auto Color = Find Dark & Light Colors

If you images are too dark, then your shadow clipping must be higher than the default of 0.10%. If your shadow clipping is 0.10% than your monitor may need calibrations, than you may want to look into calibrating your monitor. You can set the shadows to 0%though(and click save as defaults) , and that should stop your images form getting darker.
