Dumb question for someone who should know better, but I want to know if a generic save on an existing file will keep the settings that I've already used in a "Save As..." or "Save for Web & Devices".
I routinely have to save out in specific color modes for client work. Very common is Save For Web --> PNG-8 adaptive, or Save As ---> BMP 565.
If I don't save the files correctly, programmers will complain, I will soon be unemployed & homeless, the civilized world will grind to a halt, etc etc. However, there's always a change down the road with the file. Something needs to be resized, etc, so I open up one of these .pngs or .bmps. I push some pixels around, and then I'm ready to save. 99.99% of the time, I have not added any pixels that outside of in the existing color set.
At this point I wonder, do I need to go through the time consuming process or saving correctly with a "Save As" or "Save for Web & Devices", or seeing as I did that already and haven't changed the color space, can I just "Save"?
Simply "Save"-ing would save me lots of time. However, if that's not kosher, knowing that everyone else has to go through the same rigamarole will ease my pain.
Also, if anyone has any suggestions for ways to analyze existing graphics to see if they conform to certain modes, that would let me test this out on my own.
Postscript: [pun intended] I just tried simply saving a BMP 565, and it looked terrible. I might have answered my own question.
