Hanging indent not working

Hello,

I consider myself computer savvy, and yet I am having the darndest time getting any sort of hanging indent to work. Most of the forum posts are about issues once you have a hanging indent going - I can't even get to that step. I am familiar with Microsoft Word where, if you want a hanging indent, you click on the bottom tab icon and drag it to create a hanging indent.

I can get the top tab icon to move, indenting the first line. However, if I go to the bottom tab icon, it moves both the bottom and the top, every time. This is how I am not able to get a hanging indent. Any tips? I wouldn't have asked this if I hadn't have fiddled around for nearly an hour trying to create a hanging indent.
